So, I got a pretty interesting phishing/scam call today. It followed exactly this script:
https://t.co/C65sa5YB8qι_india_scam/
Pretty embarrassing to admit, but I did share an image of the front page of my passport.
And that was it. After almost 2 hours on the call, I finally hung up. I was already in the office and had skipped two meetings because of this.
They kept threatening me that if I disconnected the call, it would mean I was "not cooperating" and therefore complicit in some money-laundering case.
Eventually, I was like, fuck it, and hung up.
I searched the numbers they had called me from to see whether they actually belonged to the police or the Consulate General of India. I also called @IndiainNewYork directly, and they confirmed that it was a scam and they have an Alert already an alert about this exact kind of scam on their website.
The scammers kept calling afterward, but I didn't pick up.
I immediately called home, and their response was basically: "You live in a trust-based society right now, but you aren't from one. So why would you even entertain these calls. Fair enough 😅
I then messaged the scammers on Teams saying that I'd reported them to the NYPD.
That's when things got interesting.
They called me back and started hurling abuses at me in full Hindi. The kind of vocabulary you'd normally only hear in a boys' hostel 😂. They even keep on insisting that the "authorities" were going to take me into custody.
So yeah, wasted a whole 2 hours of my morning on this.
Attaching whatever documents/messages I got from them in case it helps someone recognize the scam before getting sucked into it.
I still don't know exactly how they planned to eventually extort money from me.
My mom feels emotions to high extremes, while I feel the exact opposite. It makes me feel guilty most of the time. Maybe guilty is the only thing that I can feel.
Now boarding -- #KhajurahoAirport into top customer-ranking slot, without any flights. The airport in the #MadhyaPradesh town - recently ranked India's top airport in the Airports Authority of India's latest Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) - has produced a surprising result: it has no commercial flights operating during July and Aug.

I just realised, nobody in the West really asks "What's your father" as smalltalk even to a kid. This is exclusively Indian and may be related to casteism.
