An unexpected addition to our thermal dazzling session with @handles4forks last night, together with a Grey Partridge & 8 new Skylarks we found this October Quail! This is our first ringed on the farm. Large coveys of Greys seen & a few Golden plover noted too!

Spotted in Shropshire: one very fashion-forward Starling skipping the feathers this season. A bit chilly for the no-coat look, but she’s rocking it! Also sporting a quirky beak, but feeding like a champ and looking healthy. Natures got style and surprises! 🌟🦩

A visit to @farmer_richardT this week saw us ring

This included a very large Skylark which was well over 40g and had a wing on 124mm!

A stunning night was perfect for the first Storm Petrel session of the year. 125 birds included three controls ringed elsewhere and a bird ringed here as a chick in 2022. Magic

Last night we recaptured a female Nightjar on Cannock Chase that was originally ringed by @GrahamDeacon12 of North Wilts RG as a 1cy bird on the 16/08/23 on Salisbury Plain. Its likely it was born on the Chase & was migrating via Salisbury Plain returning to Cannock to breed!

164 birds including 117 warblers of 9 species were ringed @PortlandBirdObs . 16 Whitethroat,10Sedge,6Reed,3 Less.White 2 Garden and a GrasshopperW illustrated the greater variety than of late.7 Redstart and 4 controls; Pied .F,Garden W &2 Whitethroat added to the excellent day.

A cold easterly wind with cloud still resulted in 137 birds but of only 9 species ringed at @PortlandBirdObs today. 110 Willow Warblers most with only single Redstart, Reed,Sedge,2 Garden Warblers , 9 CC & 2 Whitethroat. Only 5 degrees plus windchill later at mistnet closing.

We need some optics for the staff at @Flatholmers if anyone is thinking of upgrading their kit and selling their old bins/scope, could you please get in touch with me? We need at least two binoculars and one scope. This will help us to get more data of returning breeders! 🙏

This week I have been staying at a great little place on an inlet near Rhosneigr in Anglesey, it has been like staying in a bird hide for a week!

Highlights include this juv Black Redstart, Short eared owl, Curlew, Turnstone, Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Greenshank and much more!
