UVA Vascular Surgery was well represented at the Virginia Vascular Society Meeting! Congrats to Drs. Kristina Weitzel & Aqiyl Mills on their awards, and to Dr. Darrin Clouse, Meeting President. Proud of our vascular fellows & surgery residents! #VascularSurgery#SurgicalEducation
@rowe_vincent@SCVS1969@VascularSVS When data on 1.7 million operations shows surgeons are doing longer operations on sicker, more complex patients - yet facing a 2.5% reduction in wRVU payment based on flawed assumptions about efficiency...
Wonder why our surgeons are burning out at record rates?
It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces at the Virginia Surgery Reception during the ACS Clinical Congress in DC! Thanks to the faculty, trainees, and alumni who joined us! #ACSCC2026@AmCollSurgeons
Congratulations and welcome to my new partner Elizabeth Yates, MD- now hailing from Charlottesville, VA! All surgeons are advocates- in this case for sustainability- being conscious of energy efficiency and minimization of waste in clinical operations. @UvaVascular@UVASurgery

"If you're a physician reading this, take a Valium before the next paragraph. The budget neutrality constraint that governs the PFS — where every dollar increase in one service must be offset by a dollar decrease somewhere else — applies only to the physician fee schedule. It does not apply to Medicare spending as a whole. Congress can and does appropriate additional money for hospitals, for MA plans, for drug coverage, for post-acute care — all outside the zero-sum straitjacket that governs physician payment."
Upset about the proposed Medicare physician fee schedule changes? Wonder why physicians are getting hosed?
It’s not actually @CMSGov’s fault. Their hands are tied here. Fixing it will literally require an act of congress.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that retired Army Colonel (Dr.) Norman M. Rich, Professor Emeritus and one of the founding figures of the SAVS passed away on June 18, 2026, at the age of 92. His lifetime achievements were too numerous to count. He established the Vietnam Vascular Registry, which became the model for modern military outcomes databases and trauma registries, helping physicians study injury patterns, refine treatments, and save lives on battlefields around the world. He also founded the Walter Reed Vascular Fellowship Program and was president of several major vascular societies. Among his many honors were the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the Presidential Medallion presented by President Ronald Reagan, the Society for Vascular Surgery Lifetime Achievement Award, the Michael E. DeBakey Award, the René Leriche Award, the Founders Award of the American Venous Four, and ultimately was designated as an “Icon of Surgery”. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life of extraordinary purpose and impact. Dr. Rich leaves behind a legacy measured not only in surgical innovations, academic achievements, and professional honors, but also in the countless lives saved by those he taught, the institution he helped build, and the generations of military medical professionals who continue to follow the example he set.
Who needs light reading on their way to #VAM2026 ? In North Carolina, heart disease is the leading cause of death. I spoke with @BusinessNC about how North Carolina communities still face limited access to vascular specialists and the need to expand care https://t.co/7RxL4jnc6L
A landmark trial led by @LindaMThoracic is now published! In patients with complex lung cancer that had spread to nearby lymph nodes, immunotherapy + chemotherapy before surgery showed low toxicity and high rates of nodal clearance and complete resection. https://t.co/8cjvu9hqgP
Star @MedicineUVA student Laiba Murad at @SCVS1969 presenting work with @FarivarMD comparing the relationship of different frailty indices with rates of postoperative complications after vascular surgery
No one, and we mean like no one, not a single person in the galaxy,
understands the business of medicine/surgery like Dr. Francesco Aiello. We are so lucky to have him @UMassVascSurg . And the crazy part, he’s an absolutely technically gifted surgeon as well!!!
Congratulations to Dr. Linda Martin, our newly elected GTSC Chair and the first woman to lead the Club! We look forward to her leadership in this role over the next two years. @LindaMThoracic
Last week to apply for the ACS Health Policy Scholarships! Had the privilege of attending last year and spending a week at Brandeis learning from and with leading surgeons in the health policy space. Highly recommend!
