Today, I met with top officials of KPMG and Carbon Global Partners on the Nigeria Green Fund and Sovereign Carbon Credit Programme at the Conference Room Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NNPC Towers, Abuja.
I am deeply saddened by the tragic gas explosion that occurred on Friday, 21 November 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State. My heartfelt condolences go to the Government and people of Oyo State, especially the families who lost loved ones and those who sustained injuries.
Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion occurred while a gas tanker was offloading LPG into a 2.5MT illegal skid situated within a densely populated neighbourhood. The resulting blast caused extensive damage to nearby homes, shops, and a church.
This incident was needless and entirely preventable. It is unacceptable for anyone to endanger lives by operating illegal gas facilities or engaging in unsafe practices.
Gas is safe when handled responsibly. It is negligence, the use of substandard equipment, and unlawful operations that lead to tragedies such as this.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has commenced a full investigation into the incident. I urge residents and eyewitnesses to cooperate with investigators so that the exact cause can be established and future occurrences prevented.
Let me be clear: illegal operators must immediately vacate the sector. The Federal Government will not hesitate to shut down unsafe sites, prosecute offenders, and enforce all safety regulations to protect lives, property, and public confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, inspected Supertech Chemical Industry’s Methanol and Ammonium Bicarbonate Plant in Okitipupa, Ondo State. Nigeria’s first Methanol production facility, alongside top NNPC and GACN executives.
Today, I had the honour of representing Nigeria at ADIPEC 2025 in Abu Dhabi, where I joined fellow global energy leaders for a ministerial panel discussion on “Global Shifts: Navigating an Era of Diverging Priorities.”
I emphasized that for developing nations like Nigeria, the energy transition must not impede development or deepen poverty noting that we cannot decarbonize to poverty.
Our transition must be just, inclusive, and aligned with our national development goals. Natural gas remains central to Nigeria’s lower carbon pathway and industrialisation agenda under the Renewed Hope vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Let me restate our commitment to attracting investment in gas infrastructure, promoting technology adoption, and strengthening international partnerships that ensure energy access, security, and sustainable growth for Nigeria, for Africa, and for the world.
Yesterday, I had the honour of addressing stakeholders at the 2025 Annual Downstream Petroleum Week Conference, organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), in Abuja.
I emphasized that while Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector has made remarkable progress through deregulation, liberalization, and renewed private investment, there is still more work to be done.
To sustain the gains achieved so far, we must deepen collaboration between government, the private sector, and industry regulators. No single arm of government can do it alone. Together, we must strengthen infrastructure, stabilize market systems, and ensure that reforms deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.
Under the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our Renewed Hope Agenda and the Decade of Gas Initiative are steering the nation toward cleaner, more affordable, and more accessible energy—especially through CNG and LPG adoption.
With synergy and shared purpose, we can transform our downstream sector into a robust engine of growth, innovation, and prosperity for all.
Today, I had the honour of launching the Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS) — a landmark initiative that strengthens safety, transparency, and accountability in our nation’s growing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) ecosystem.
This system ensures that only vehicles converted at accredited centres using certified kits can access CNG at approved stations, providing end-to-end oversight from conversion to refuelling. It marks a major step forward in guaranteeing public safety, enhancing regulatory compliance, and deepening trust in CNG as a cleaner, more affordable fuel alternative.
I commend the Presidential Initiative on CNG (Pi-CNG) for its innovation and leadership in driving this programme. The NGVMS introduces a vital layer of digital transparency while establishing a unified operational framework that connects conversion centres, kit suppliers, regulators, and end-users under a single safety standard.
As the Ministry responsible for midstream and downstream gas development, we remain fully committed to supporting this initiative through policy alignment, regulatory collaboration, and stakeholder engagement. Working closely with our partners, we will ensure that the rollout of CNG infrastructure and vehicle conversions across Nigeria meets the highest standards of safety and quality assurance.
Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Decade of Gas Initiative, we are building a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive gas economy.
