An incredibly powerful and incredibly important message.
Dear @POTUS (& @PressSec)
An ambitious, but simple plan to convert holidays into an time to REDUCE #COVID19
1) Give every American 4 #RapidTests
2) Ask every American to test on Dec 25, 28, 31, Jan 3
3) Simultaneous mass severing of transmission chains can collapse outbreaks
NOTE:
Do NOT use rapid tests in the cold.
If using rapid tests this holiday season and asking ppl to test before a gathering… or any time…
Suggest they be done before leaving the house, or in the car, etc. Someplace >55 F
For @UCSF grand rounds today, we did a deep dive on Trump's case/Rose Garden/testing/therapies. It was a remarkable discussion, well beyond the usual fare to highlight the latest science, using current events as a teachable moment. Worth your time: https://t.co/DYuvHEnuh6 (1/2)
WATCH: Dr. Fauci pushes back against Sen. Paul's comments on New York's response to the coronavirus:
"You misconstrued that, senator. And you've done that repetitively in the past."
There's poor performance in the midst a crisis (think of, say, the mayor of a certain large city on the Eastern Seaboard) but when you're not even able or willing to go the motions of providing traditional leadership that seems like another level entirely.

If you are hearing about #covid19 “reinfections” in Asia, I can offer you my take as a virologist. The best explanation for what we’re seeing is likely due to three things...
In last 24 hrs there've been prominent US voices calling for a stop to social distancing, citing rationale that they're worse than impact of COVID itself. It’s worth looking very closely at that claim, where we are in US COVID epidemic and what happens if we stop. 1/x
Many doctors talking to me saying the best approach might be to put all the ICU patients in one big room like a recovery area, suit up for the day and conserve Masks and personal equipment similar to what was done in China. What do others think? #COVID19
The massive blow to the economy is a result of social distancing.
The social distancing is a result of the failure to have sufficient tests.
The failure to have sufficient tests is a result of Trump’s incompetence or unwillingness to acknowledge the threat.
A distillery in DuLuth, Minnesota, seeing an opportunity, converted the distillery from making alcohol to making hand sanitizer.
And you know what they’re selling it for? They’re giving it away free.
There are going to be thousands of stories like this to lift up.
4) Social distancing strategy. Can technology (i.e. temperature scanners) help? What activities can be made safer? What things can/can't we live without for >3 months?
Hopefully by working on ALL 4 FRONTS AT ONCE—plus economic stabilization—society can avoid the worst outcomes.
Front 1) Hospital capacity. The most urgent. ICUs. Ventilators. Doctors.
2) Testing and surveillance. MORE, better, faster tests. More contact tracing.
3) Treatments/vaccines. Some of the news on treatments seems hopeful. Vaccines will take time but are the long-term endgame.
