At the Africa Food Systems Forum, our Country Director, Verena Ruzibuka, joined a panel on Agri-Entrepreneurship Mentorship: 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. She shared practical insights on overcoming one of the biggest barriers young agripreneurs face: 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥.
𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:
𝟏️. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Early wins funded by family savings, cooperatives, or savings groups create the track record that financiers look for. Capital doesn’t follow dreams; it follows discipline and demand.
𝟐. 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲: Youth-led groups or clusters can negotiate better terms with banks, buyers, and input suppliers than individuals.
𝟑. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤-𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Guarantee funds, co-investments, and partnerships with impact investors can unlock lending where banks hesitate.
𝟒. 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: Pay-as-you-grow, digital micro-lending, and embedded finance with off-takers are tailored for youth and smallholders.
𝟓. 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐭: Partnerships with processors, tech firms, and off-takers bring not only financial benefits but also mentorship and market access.
𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞: Don’t just chase money, chase markets. When agripreneurs prove traction and reliability, investors will find them. She concluded.
