#badUX: My fiancé ordered a suit from @belk for our wedding. It didn't fit. Suit returned June 2 via the US Post. No refund. Called @belk last week; receipt acknowledged, promised refund within 5 days, which didn't show. Called today, stalled 5 days again. Is this postal fraud?
When you make promises to customers based on best case scenarios “ready in as little as 30 minutes!”and don’t deliver on them or communicate delays, you are eroding trust in your brand. Yes, “as little as 30” includes “much more than 30”. Still a disappointing UX. @Walgreens
Please don’t waste customers’ time with surveys to resolve internal squabbles. It’s embarrassing. Got a naming survey from AAA today with a cutsey name that didn’t convey product’s value prop. Actual survey Q: “Why don’t you like the name Better Nest?” Because I’m not a bird? 🤦🏻♀️
I’m a big fan of dimensional visual clues generally. But upgrading from MacOS Catalina to Big Sur last night gave me a moment of deja vu- going from flat to skeuomorphic was like traveling back in time to the 90s. Did anyone else find the contrast unsettling?
@cydharrell I personally like to let people be excited about things, especially when it leads to a desired outcome. Performative virtue shaming is a weird kind of bullying.
@kingofark It’s a role in high demand. You’re right, it’s entitled as hell, and it’s maybe not true if you can’t relocate- but as long as there’s a demand for skilled UX researchers, why not leverage it? Sellers’ market tactics apply.
@paige_trnr @jmarshallBKLYN Right? The field both promotes people to the level of their incompetence, or devalues and overlooks competence entirely because of age, race, gender or even neurotypical biases.
@gretared Which companies have funded programs to teach and support entry level devs and designers? Internships don’t seem to work at scale- maybe something more comprehensive is needed to funnel in and train the next generation? Who is doing this well?
@jmarshallBKLYN The thing is, even as a mentor, It’s Not About You. Encouragement and validation of their potential is great. Pushing someone forward who would rather prioritize their family or something other than career advancement means you’re not really hearing them or honoring their truth.
Career advice for UX Researchers: you have LOTS of options. You don’t need to sell out and work for an employer who doesn’t share your values. If a company is actively harming the planet or community, tell the recruiter/HR partner you’re not a culture fit and move on.
@jmarshallBKLYN It’s perfectly fine for people to want security in your career if that’s better for them or their families. Not everyone need to be on an growth path. And good managers will find new challenges and roles for people to grow into.
The Meta announcement makes me think a) Zuck read Stephenson’s Snow Crash at a very impressionable age b) he still hasn’t mastered how to listen to people in conversation and c) he doesn’t believe the research on the ineffectiveness of multitasking.
@tomeustace Nope! My team has openings all over the world. Dublin, Melbourne, Singapore.. maybe even Montreal and Copenhagen. Check the jobs site and see!
