If your reaction to the Coldcard debacle is, “Self-custody isn’t for me. I’ll just buy IBIT or leave my bitcoin on an exchange”, then you have learned exactly the wrong lesson.

Yes, some people did everything right, followed the instructions and still got screwed. That’s true, and I’m deeply sorry for anyone now dealing with the consequences.

But the lesson isn’t that self-custody was a mistake. It’s that all of us should use this as a reason to dust off our security, review our setup and question the assumptions we’ve allowed to become routine.

IBIT gives you price exposure. An exchange gives you an account balance. Neither gives you bitcoin that you can hold, verify and move without permission. They work beautifully while the rules remain friendly. So does every permissioned system.

The real test comes when push comes to shove: frozen accounts, capital controls, political pressure, tighter reporting requirements and financial infrastructure designed to monitor and approve your activity. CBDCs, MiCA, cameras and expanding financial surveillance are hardly pointing towards a renaissance of private money.

You may think the ETF is harmless today. Wait until the wrapper becomes the leash. And if all you ever wanted was more fiat, fine. Buy the ETF. Buy the S&P 500. Watch the number go up. But don’t confuse that with owning Bitcoin, and don’t pretend it has anything to do with separating money from state.

Self-custody is harder because freedom carries responsibility. The answer to one vendor’s failure is better practice and fewer single points of failure. It isn’t to run back to the institutions Bitcoin was built to make optional.

I understand the reaction but 100 independent rolls of a fair 6 sided die provide about 258.5 bits of theoretical entropy. If the hardware wallet correctly uses those rolls as an independent entropy source, the resulting seed does not need to rely solely on the device’s built-in TRNG.
