When the Inner Lamp Is Lit: Love, Self-Realization, and the Unity of Truth
The poem “Agar Hai Shauq Milne Ka…” is a powerful mystical exhortation to transform the inner self rather than merely perform external religious rituals. Its central message is that the ultimate spiritual journey begins when a seeker turns inward and discovers the Divine within.
The poet uses bold and provocative imagery—breaking the prayer mat, beads, books, fasting, ritual ablution, and even abandoning the mosque—to challenge attachment to outward forms of religion. These expressions should not be understood as a literal rejection of religion. Rather, they symbolize the need to transcend ritualism, religious pride, ego, and dualistic thinking. The real prayer is the surrender of the ego; the real ablution is purification of the heart; the real fast is freedom from anger, greed, hatred, and selfishness.
The metaphor of the “broom of love” is especially significant. Divine love cleanses the heart of the dust of duality—the illusion of “I” and “you,” “mine” and “yours,” “Hindu” and “Muslim,” “self” and “other.” When this division disappears, the seeker begins to experience the unity underlying all existence.
This vision resonates deeply with the world’s mystical traditions. Kabir teaches that God should not be sought merely in temples, mosques, pilgrimages, or scriptures, but within one’s own being. The Upanishads proclaim “Tat Tvam Asi”—“You are That”—and “Aham Brahmasmi”—“I am Brahman.” The Bhagavad Gita speaks of one who sees the Divine everywhere and everything in the Divine. Sufi mysticism, through the language of ishq (divine love), fana (dissolution of the ego), and Mansur al-Hallaj’s “Ana al-Haqq,” similarly points toward the transcendence of individual identity in ultimate Truth. Rumi, Guru Nanak, Meera, Rabia, and Buddhist wisdom express related insights in different cultural languages.
The poem therefore does not advocate chaos or rejection of tradition. Its deeper message is: do not mistake the vessel for the water, the map for the destination, or the ritual for realization. Temple, mosque, scripture, prayer, meditation, and fasting can all be valuable paths—but their purpose is inner transformation.
Ultimately, the poem calls us to move from self-display to self-knowledge, from ego to love, from duality to unity, and from external seeking to inner realization. Its final invitation is simple yet profound: keep the flame of longing alive until the seeker, the search, and the Truth become one.
BECOME AGELESS — BECOME IMMORTAL
The Song of Self-Knowledge — Inspired by the Ashtavakra Gita
If liberation is what you truly seek,
Renounce the senses as you would deadly poison.
Drink instead the nectar of forgiveness,
Simplicity, compassion, contentment and truth.
The world is a fire that burns without end—
Turn away from its flames and enter
The cool, serene land of inner peace.
Know who you truly are.
Become ageless. Become immortal.
You are not the earth, nor water,
Neither fire, nor air, nor space.
You are the eternal Consciousness—
The silent Witness of them all,
Untouched, unstained, beyond every form.
Recognize your own true nature.
Become ageless. Become immortal.
Separate Consciousness from the body
And rest in the stillness of pure awareness.
You will discover peace this very moment.
Let go of pride in caste, station,
Ashrama and every worldly identity.
Release your attachment to the body.
You are Consciousness, not the body.
Become ageless. Become immortal.
Dharma and adharma do not belong to you.
Pleasure and pain are but movements of the mind.
You are neither the doer nor the enjoyer.
You are the One Witness of all that appears—
Ever beyond the changing scene.
Know yourself.
Become ageless. Become immortal.
“I am the doer”—this is the serpent
That has bitten you with the poison of ego.
Know instead: “I am not the doer.”
Drink this nectar of wisdom
And be free from the bondage of becoming.
You are not the doer.
Become ageless. Become immortal.
“I am pure. I am awakened.”
Let this knowledge become a blazing fire.
Burn away the forest of ignorance.
Just as a serpent appears upon a rope,
So does the universe appear in Consciousness.
You are that pure Awareness—
That very Bliss.
Become ageless. Become immortal.
The one who knows, “I am free,” is free.
The one who believes, “I am bound,” remains bound.
Indeed, the ancient wisdom is true:
As is the mind, so is the destiny.
Rise beyond the imagined chains of existence.
Become ageless. Become immortal.
The Self is pure, unmoving and eternal—
The Witness, all-pervading, complete and free.
Conscious, unattached, desireless, peaceful and fulfilled.
Through ignorance alone, the timeless Self
Appears to wander through birth and death.
O seeker, know yourself.
You are not what comes and goes.
You are That which always IS.
Become ageless.
Become immortal.
— Essence of Ashtavakra Gita, Chapter 1: The Path of Freedom
«“You are not the body, not the mind, not the doer.
You are pure Consciousness—the eternal Witness.”»
Know Thyself. Be Free.
🕉️ Pilgrimage, Temple, Satsang & Sant-Darshan
The Inner Journey of Sanatana Dharma
1/10
In Sanatana Dharma, pilgrimage, temples, satsang and saints are not merely religious practices. They are stages of an inner journey—from external faith to inner transformation, from ritual to realization, and from worldly attachment to Divine Love.
2/10
Darshan is more than seeing.
Seeing a saint is only the beginning.
Listening to the saint is the next step.
Understanding the teaching is deeper.
Living that teaching is the fulfillment of Sant-Darshan.
The real question is:
“What changed within me?”
3/10
The Srimad Bhagavata Mahapurana says:
“The saints are My heart, and I am the heart of the saints.”
A true saint embodies truth, compassion, humility, service and Divine remembrance.
4/10
Approach a saint not with pride, but with humility.
Not to display knowledge, but to learn.
Not to judge others, but to correct oneself.
Not to change the world, but to transform oneself.
The body may bow at a saint’s feet; the deeper act is to place the ego there.
5/10
Satsang is not merely sitting near a saint.
It is:
Listening → Understanding → Contemplating → Practising → Transformation.
If we hear spiritual wisdom but return unchanged, the satsang remains incomplete.
6/10
Tulsidas describes the community of saints as:
“जंगम तीरथराजू” — a living, moving pilgrimage.
Where there is devotion, wisdom, Brahma-vichara, compassion and purification of the heart, there is a living Tirtha.
A saint can make the spiritual meaning of pilgrimage come alive.
7/10
The true purpose of pilgrimage is not merely change of place, but change of vision.
The body travels from home to a holy place; the mind should travel from worldly preoccupation toward God.
A successful pilgrimage returns us with greater humility, compassion, truth, service and devotion.
8/10
Bharata gives us the ideal of pilgrimage.
His prayer was:
“May my love for the lotus feet of Sita-Rama remain firm.”
This is the highest spirit of pilgrimage—not merely asking for worldly gains, but asking for Divine love.
9/10
The spiritual journey can be understood as:
Pilgrimage → Purification → Satsang → Discrimination → Detachment → Devotion → Divine Name → Love → Self-knowledge.
The true measure of pilgrimage is not how many sacred places we have visited, but how deeply they have transformed us.
10/10
Ultimately:
Pilgrimage moves the body.
The temple bows the mind.
Satsang awakens the intellect.
The saint transforms our vision.
Scripture gives wisdom.
Devotion melts the heart.
Divine Love purifies life.
