Van Helmont wanted to know where the mass of a tree comes from, and he carefully weighed every gram of soil, but never “weighed” the air and the light. His mistake may look naive today, but it carries an important lesson: we tend to consider real only what we can touch and put on the scales.
The willow experiment reminds us that the most important things in our lives often come from the invisible: from ideas, meaning, relationships, from the “air” we breathe without noticing it. We measure money, possessions, and success, but we hardly ever measure attention, trust, and kindness - even though it is precisely they that, like carbon dioxide for a tree, quietly create our inner “mass.”

Jan Baptista van Helmont carried out one of the first quantitative experiments in biology to measure, rather than guess, where a tree gets its mass. He took a large tub, filled it with carefully dried and weighed soil (about 90–91 kg), planted in it a willow shoot weighing about 2.3–2.5 kg, and covered the vessel with a metal sheet with holes so that nothing except water and air could get inside. For five years, he watered the willow only with clean water. During this time, the shoot turned into a tree, gaining about 74–76 kg of mass, while the mass of the soil changed by only about 0.05–0.06 kg. From this, van Helmont concluded that the growth of the plant is determined mainly by water, although we now know that carbon dioxide from the air and the energy of light also play a decisive role.
