Israeli hero aboard nearly-hijacked FlyDubai flight FZ 1073: Yaniv Hayoun
Hayoun has no background in security. But when he realized there was an attempted hijacking, he knew he had to do something.
He ran to the cockpit and physically fought with the co-pilot, who had stabbed the pilot and was attempting to crash the plane. Hayoun put the co-pilot in a chokehold and dragged. him out of the cockpit. Others came over to help restrain him.
Hayoun then went back into the cockpit and pulled back on the yoke to pull the plane out of its nosedive. The plane had dropped 17,000+ feet in under two minutes.
An off-duty pilot then entered the cockpit and took over the controls, and Haroun went back out to help guard the co-pilot.
A pilot saving passengers’ lives while protecting the plane from being hijacked is truly a heroic moment.
It’s not just about pressing a switch next to them to lock or secure the cockpit door from the inside. It’s about making the right decision in a split second, staying calm, and not letting panic take over.
Imagine being at gunpoint and knowing that you’re not just responsible for saving yourself, but hundreds of other lives too - and you don’t even have a second to panic.
I don’t know how extensively situations like this are taught during pilot training,
but the presence of mind and courage it takes to handle something like this is genuinely admirable.
A year ago on a podcast, Captain Smit Machchhar said:
“When something goes wrong in the air, who is going to save your life? The crew can save your life.”
Today, those exact words proved to be true.
🇮🇳 This is the Indian captain Smit Machchar who valiantly fought off the terrorist co-pilot attacker, who suddenly stabbed him allegedly to hijack and crash the plane full of Israelis.
Let's all pray for Captain Smit's speedy recovery. Look at him - he's such a gentleman that he's requesting passengers to be kind and treat all airline crew well.
Captain Smit Machchhar, captain of flydubai Flight 1073, fought back after being stabbed in the cockpit.
Despite being severely injured, he managed to unlock the cockpit door - allowing passengers and the crew to intervene and save all the passengers . His extraordinary courage saved 174 lives.
In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others and His bravery and courage helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy.
Bharat is proud of Captain Smit Machchhar.
Praying for his speedy recovery and good health.
An Indian captain gets attacked in his own cockpit at 34,000 feet.
flydubai FZ1073, Dubai to Tel Aviv, 170+ people on board. The Omani co-pilot allegedly tries to take the plane down. It drops thousands of feet in seconds.
Captain Smit Machchhar, bleeding and lying on the cockpit floor, reaches up and releases the door lock. The relief pilots rush in, take control and land at Tabuk. Everyone walks off alive.
The weapon was probably the crash axe that every airliner is required to carry in the cockpit. It's there to save lives.
Netanyahu called them "heroes who showed extraordinary courage."
BBC went with "Israel-bound flight diverted after fight between pilots."
A fight. Like two colleagues arguing over the AC.
And be honest: if that plane had gone down, whose name would have been in the first headline? We've already seen how quickly the Indian captain gets blamed. Remember AI171.
Neerja Bhanot then. Smit Machchhar now. We are Indians. We are selfless. We fight terrorists, defeat their plans and save lives! 🫡🇮🇳
