@JimmyKimmelLive Hi Jimmy, As an American Venezuelan who has never voted for Donald Trump, I found the comments on your show yesterday, insulting and condescending to the 30 million Venezuelans who have endured a devastating national tragedy for more than three decades. I strongly encourage you to take the time to research the reality of Venezuela before making comparisons to the United States.
I lived in Venezuela until I was 17 and have now lived in the U.S. for 13 years. I can say with absolute certainty that the United States in no way resembles the lived reality of Venezuela. From a position of immense privilege, your remarks trivialized the suffering of an entire nation.
This is not rhetoric, it is documented reality:
Venezuela has seen 36,800 victims of torture and state violence, 18,305 political detainees, and more than 10,000 extrajudicial executions. There are over 8,000 registered cases of human rights violations and 468 people killed during protests for demanding basic rights and democracy.
More than 8 million Venezuelans have been forcibly displaced, separating families for years or forever. Today, 90% of the population lives in poverty, 50% in extreme poverty, and the monthly minimum wage is approximately $3 USD.
Freedom of expression has been systematically dismantled, with over 400 media outlets censored or shut down. Venezuela has held three presidential elections without official or international recognition, leaving its people without any legitimate democratic recourse.
Have you ever had to eat from a dumpster?
Have you lost a family member because essential medicines were unavailable?
Have you gone years without seeing your loved ones?
Have you or someone you love been incarcerated and tortured for political reasons?
Have you lived through week-long blackouts during which children died in hospitals?
These are not hypotheticals. They are the lived experiences of millions of Venezuelans.
You position yourself as a representative of the party of democracy, freedom, and human rights. Yet with a single joke, you diminished the suffering of an entire people. The hatred for one man should never eclipse or trivialize the pain of millions.
You have an enormous platform. I urge you to use it with greater responsibility, empathy, and respect for those whose lives have been defined by repression, loss, and exile.
Do better.
@DavidEMatheus96 Creo que es hasta un buen comienzo que te lo pregunten. Una vez me dijeron "Cómo eres tan educada si creciste en Venezuela?" - sin comentarios.
