lando went into a brand new track and was already on the backfoot with a gearbox issue that mclaren likely haven’t fixed since monza. they cost him a whole session and he was already on the backfoot compared to all his competitors. he went into quali using the first laps to get as much experience, then pulled off a miracle lap, going 0.7 secs faster and putting the 4th fastest car on pole.

he knew how crucial track position was in this race, had a faster reaction off the line, defended hard against kimi to hold the lead and built a 6 secs gap before the vsc came out. the fia calls the vsc conveniently after lando passes the pitlane, despite the car being stopped for at least 30 secs before. mclaren sees that the track is clear and still calls him into the pits, he has a 7.0 sec pitstop and comes out in p5, now 16 seconds behind the lead.

he keeps pushing, setting fastest laps and trying anything to get those positions back, but it’s not enough when overtaking here is almost impossible. he spends most races trying to undo the damage caused by his team, and his drives the entire season will never go unnoticed. truly the driver of the season.

@F1Tornello @FranColapinto Permíteme estar en desacuerdo, Lando hizo absolutamente TODO para ganar, la mala suerte y McLaren le cagaron la carrera, pero kimi tuvo suerte tanto con el virtual como cuando a Max lo DEJÓ PASAR entonces yo creo que lo de asombroso no tuvo nada..

it's the fact that mclaren knew lando had been dealing with gearbox issues since monza, and it took for it to completely fall apart for them to actually take it seriously. they've now cost him an entire session and he's already down 30% of the running time compared to the others at a brand new track where every single lap of data matters.

he's only had 3/14 weekends this season with little to no issues, and in those he got a sprint pole, sprint win, two poles and two wins. (he could've also won miami if the team also hadn't cost him with strategy)

he's managed to mask a lot of their issues by still pulling good results out of the other weekends, but there's only so much he can compensate for. we're already over half of the season, the team needs to actually get serious about sorting these problems out instead of waiting for them to become impossible to ignore everytime.

in quali, lando gave oscar the tow he needed in the first run, but didn't get the same back and ended up starting the race out of position.

overnight, his mechanics tried to fix the major brake issues he'd had since FP3, but the fix didn't work. then in the race, he was fighting brakes that weren't working properly, before his shifts and buttons stopped working and the car started going into false neutrals. he and his engineer were having to figure out what they could change to make the car drivable all race.

disaster after disaster was thrown at him this weekend and he still went from P8 to P4. THAT was a championship drive from lando.
