Today Our sons just walked in the house at 2am. Guess what? My husband said absolutely nothing.
So I leaned over and said “ in 5 years, I hope you give our daughters the same freedoms you give our sons “.
During a dinner with relatives, the topic of equality came up. I asked a male relative, “Are you a feminist?”
“No,” he said.
“A feminist is someone who believes that women deserve the same rights and opportunities as men. You’re not a feminist?” I asked.
“No!” he said, louder this time.
“But you have daughters. When they grow up, do you think they should be paid the same as men?” I asked.
“Of course,” he said.
“Then you’re a feminist,” I said.
“No, I am not!” he said.
“And that is NOT the definition of a feminist,” he added.
“Okay, let’s google it.” I googled it and read, “A feminist is someone who believes men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.”
“I am not a feminist!” he shouted and walked out of the room.
His tween daughters gave me side eye.
“Don’t worry. He will be soon,” I said.
Interesting how such a positive word can be interpreted as “nasty.” What words have you noticed cause a visceral response in others..?
