DFS was supposed to be a great equalizer, bridging the digital divide and bringing millions if not billions under formal banking.
And while this is true, what we often forget is that the digital divide between men and women seems to be increasing.
Take this CGAP article from 2022 which shows that of 66 DFS consumer risks, women are far more likely to experience them than men.
They are also more vulnerable than men to cyber-fraud and are twice as likely to have their identity stolen and are at a higher risk of online harassment.
When they experience these risks, or even hear about someone else experiencing one, they naturally are more likely to stop using digital finance altogether.
The result? More women are deprived of financial services.
This gap, shockingly, is not just driven by lower digital and financial literacy but also algorithmic bias that compounds because men dominate the datasets that train these systems.
The technology does not see the problem because it was not built to see the problem.
In Bureaunia, Mariamix does not call back after filing her complaint. The system went silent and she assumed silence means nothing will happen.
That assumption is statistically correct.
Digital tools lacking gender-intentional design are not neutral. They are discriminatory by default.
