Five men arrested over foiled armed robbery spree

Five men have been arrested in connection with a series of alleged armed robberies in Bulawayo.

Bobby Juwawu (36), of Hillside, Bulawayo, Lerato Takane (36), Forward Dube and Thabo Ndlovu, all from Johannesburg, South Africa, appeared before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Ms Sibongile Marondedze facing robbery charges.

In the first incident, the suspects allegedly raided a local company, ransacked the premises and stole about US$13,000.

On the same day, they allegedly carried out other robberies, stealing US$300 and 700 Chinese yuan (RMB).
However, during a third incident at around 2:30pm, one of the workers managed to alert the police, leading to the suspects' arrest.

The five men remain in custody as investigations continue.

Two Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) students, Tatenda and Max Matirwadza, have died in a horrific road accident while travelling from Harare to Masvingo for their graduation. The car carrying the three students crashed into the back of a truck that was in front of them.

The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed. It is still unclear whether the truck suddenly applied its emergency brakes or whether the car crashed into it while the truck was stationary. The Fire Brigade was called to the scene because all three occupants were trapped inside the wreckage. Firefighters had to cut open the damaged vehicle to rescue them.

Sadly, by the time they were pulled out, two students had died, while the third was still alive but in critical condition.
More details about the circumstances surrounding the accident are expected to emerge.
