Tamil Canadians have fled from Sri Lanka due to genocide. Since the height of genocide in 2009, I have been advocating for justice and accountability for the most serious crime committed against Tamil people. There cannot be any peace without justice and accountability in Sri Lanka.
The United Nation Human Rights Council is collecting evidences and set to outline possible strategies including trials against Sri Lankan war criminals. The City of Brampton and all levels of Government in Canada have recognized the Tamil Genocide.
However GTF along with an advisory council member of CTC presented a declaration that undermines the aspirations of the Tamil people and also aimed to bail out the Sri Lankan war criminals. This is a step backwards for the goals of justice and accountability.
It was very shocking to see that the same CTC member also posed picture with war criminal and former president Mahinda Rajapakse who is banned in Canada for the most serious crimes against Tamil people.
I strongly condemn this act by GTF and CTC. I expect that the Tamil Canadian organizations and the Canadian government will choose the right moral ground in addressing justice and accountability for the Tamil people.

@tariqahmadbt@TNAmediaoffice Sri Lanka is certainly not post conflict! Till date, reconciliation and accountability processes have failed. The Tamil people are losing trust in this international system. Other avenues to progress forward need to be explored. Not a minority! @US_SCA

Today, on Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, we honour the innocent people who lost their lives or were displaced and recognize the lasting trauma and impact this continues to have on Tamils here in Toronto and around the world.
We recognize Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day as part of our ongoing efforts to affirm the lived experiences & intersectional identities of students, staff, & families & to create safe learning environments that help students understand systems of oppression that shape their lives.
