Rebekah smiled at Katherineโs suggestion and stayed close by her side. โAt midnight?โ For a moment, she pretended she had to think it over seriously. โDramatic, spontaneous, and with a trunk full of alcohol. By our standards, that sounds surprisingly reasonable.โ A soft laugh escaped her. โAll right, then. Weโll leave at midnight.โ
At Katherineโs last words, however, Rebekah fell silent. Her gaze shifted to Katherine, and the smile on her lips softened. โI like that.โ
Rebekah nodded slowly. โThat actually sounds almost perfect.โ
But when the conversation turned to bears, she had to laugh. โAnd bears? Come on. After Niklaus, a few grumpy bears would probably seem downright relaxing to me.โ
For a brief moment, she gently rested her head against Katherineโs. โWe could find a house thatโs way too big right on the coast. With a fireplace, an ocean view, and a wine cellar that hopefully lasts longer than two days.โ
Rebekah stared at Klaus for a few seconds before an incredulous laugh escaped her lips. โMy duty?โ She set down her glass and followed him to the couch. โNik, Iโm your sister, not one of your damn subjects.โ Rebekah stopped right in front of him and crossed her arms. โIโve stood by your side for a thousand years. I fled with you from Mikael, made your enemies my own, and put up with more of your outbursts than any sane person would willingly endure.โ
She narrowed her eyes. โSo donโt lecture me about my duty.โ Her voice grew more urgent. โIf anyone is after our family, Iโll stand by your side. If Mikael comes, Iโll fight by your side. And if Marcel actually tries to destroy us, I wonโt just stand by and watch either.โ

Rebekah stood in the middle of the living room at the Mikaelson estate, staring at the dagger sheโd just found on the table. Of course. A damn dagger. โSome families keep old photos,โ she muttered. -
Rebekahโs eyebrows shot up. โBasically, all of that?โ She laughed softly, incredulously. โOf course. By now I should have known that the answer is never simple when it comes to your family.โ Her expression, however, grew more serious. โSo Cole isnโt just adapting. Heโs actually evolving, but his own body is deliberately limiting that process so that the evolution doesnโt end up destroying him.โ
Rebekah let the information sink in for a moment. โThatโs both impressive and scary.โ
Rebekah returned Katherineโs smile, though this time there was surprisingly little mockery in it. โThatโs exactly what I mean.โ She looked down the street for a moment. โIn Mystic Falls, Iโm a Mikaelson. In New Orleans, Iโm Niklausโs little sister, an original vampire, or a thousand-year-old problem that would have been better off not coming back.โ Then she shot Katherine a sidelong glance. โAnd youโre Katherine Pierce everywhere. The woman who ran away from Klaus five hundred years ago, drove all the Salvators crazy, and probably has more enemies in more cities than I have pairs of shoes.โ A grin spread across her lips. โImpressive, by the way.โ
Rebekah stopped and turned slightly toward her. โSo we should get out of here.โ She said it as matter-of-factly as if sheโd just decided to go to the nearest bar. โJust for a while. To some town where no one hears the names Mikaelson or Pierce and immediately has a story to tell about them.โ
Rebekahโs gaze shifted from Elijahโs face to the bloodstains on his shirt. She slowly raised an eyebrow. โAnd youโre seriously claiming your day was just annoying?โ She stepped closer and pointed at his shirt. โElijah, you have blood on your beloved shirt. So by your standards, something must have happened that was downright rude.โ A small smile flitted across her lips, but her eyes betrayed her genuine concern for her brother. She grabbed a glass, poured herself some whiskey as well, and sat down across from him. โBut maybe youโre right. Peace seems to be a concept for our family that we only ever hear about, but never really experience.โ
When Klausโs name came up, Rebekah rolled her eyes. โEven in a completely quiet room, Nik finds a reason to get annoyed with someone within five minutes. We should probably enjoy this rare moment while heโs not here.โ

Rebekah had already drunk two glasses of wine when she heard the familiar sound of footsteps behind her. Calm. Controlled. Almost ridiculously elegant. She didnโt need to turn around.
โElijah.โ A small smile appeared on her lips as she -
โRelax, Katerina. For once, I donโt plan on hatching any schemes.โ She shot her a meaningful sideways glance. โAnd if I do, youโll find out soon enough.โ A cheeky grin spread across her lips.
โI was actually thinking more about going somewhere where nobody knows our names, where the champagne is expensive and the music is so loud that we can forget for a few hours just how incredibly exhausting our lives are.โ
Rebekah noticed Katherineโs farewell gesture to the man and immediately burst out laughing. โVery elegant, Katherine.โ She glanced back over her shoulder one last time. โAlthough he did order us beer. Maybe he actually deserved it.โ
Once outside, Rebekah breathed in the cool night air and linked arms with Katherine again. โAnd yes, weโve definitely taken care of the alcohol part.โ
Rebekah was silent for a moment, visibly trying to process this latest revelation about his increasingly absurd family. โAdapolution.โ She repeated the word slowly and raised an eyebrow. โAdaptation fused with evolution. Of course. Why would anyone in your family be something as simple as an ordinary vampire or werewolf?โ An amused smile flitted across her lips.
โAnd you call Cole the best of you all, even though he, too, is something completely new.โ Rebekah grew visibly more curious. โAt least that explains why you talk about him differently than you do about your older brothers.โ She crossed her arms.
โBut what does that actually mean, Crimsonfang? When Cole adapts to something, does he continue to evolve? Does he get stronger when heโs confronted with new powers or dangers?โ
"To be honest my eldest brother and the older of the three teenage brothers are the most complicated of my family. My eldest brother is the Origin like i may have said. Now Cole is the best of all of us but not us he is something new Adaptation fused with Evolution, Adapolution."
Rebekah let him pull her closer without breaking eye contact for even a second. As he spoke, she slowly raised an eyebrow. โWomen who think they can handle you?โ A soft, amused laugh escaped her. โOh, Damon. Youโre forgetting again who youโre talking to.โ Her hands glided over his chest and finally came to rest on his collar. โIโm an original vampire. Iโve seen kings, warriors, and men with egos far bigger than yours come and go.โ
She pulled him a little closer to her. โAnd yet here you are, trying to convince me that youโre the danger.โ Rebekahโs gaze lingered deliberately on his lips before she looked him straight in the eyes again. โHow charming.โ
With vampiric speed, she suddenly shifted her position and pinned Damon against the nearest wall. A triumphant smile spread across her face. โBut I have to give you credit for one thing, Salvatore.โ Her lips hovered close to his. โI like your confidence.โ Rebekah kissed him briefly but pulled away immediately. The defiant gleam in her eyes grew stronger.
Rebekah blinked at him for a moment. โFour of you are older than creation itselfโฆ and yet you have brothers who are still teenagers?โ She slowly raised both eyebrows. โAnd I thought an age difference of a few centuries between siblings was complicated enough.โ
A soft laugh escaped her. โI take it all back, Crimsonfang. Your family is actually even stranger than mine. Thatโs quite an impressive feat.โ

Rebekahโs gaze shifted from Katherine to the bartender, who now looked as if he were on the verge of a nervous breakdown at any moment. โContrasting styles?โ She raised an eyebrow and pointed alternately at the two of them. โYou probably mean that youโre the one causing the chaos, and Iโm the one making sure we at least look fantastic while doing it.โ
When the bartender pointed to the bill againโobviously asking for an explanationโRebekah glanced at the total. Her eyes widened briefly. โOh.โ Then she couldnโt help but grin. โWell, that explains his expression.โ She leaned a little closer to Katherine. โI think we just spent more in a few hours than this guy probably makes in a month.โ Rebekah sat up straight again and gave the annoyed bartender her most charming smile. โDarling, you really should relax. Stress causes wrinkles.โ
Then she hooked her arm through Katherineโs and slowly led her toward the exit. โCome on, Katherine. I think our evening here is slowly coming to an end.โ She glanced back over her shoulder one last time. โBesides, you promised me a night full of bad decisions.โ
Rebekah immediately raised an eyebrow with interest at the name. โEbion.โ A small smile appeared on her lips. โSo, Kallenโs father. Hope has already mentioned his name, but apparently sheโs withheld some interesting details about this family from me.โ She crossed her arms and looked at Crimsonfang curiously.
โAnd has Hybridia met her too?โ Rebekah shook her head slightly. โDarling, Iโm starting to get the feeling that Hope knows more members of your family than I do.โ
Rebekah watched as Katherine finished off the rest of the bottle, then raised an eyebrow amusedly. โIโm just as chaotic as you?โ She placed a hand over her heart and feigned outrage. โKatherine, I have style. You have chaos. Thatโs a huge difference.โ
Rebekah stood up, smoothed out her dress, and then shot Katherine a defiant look. โAnd โfriendโ? After all that champagne, I would have at least expected โdearest Rebekah.โโ
The remark about the fireplace made her laugh, though. โHis stuff in the fireplace? Youโre already planning to divorce a man whose last name we probably donโt even know yet.โ
She grabbed Katherineโs hand and pulled her up from the table.
Rebekah watched her brother in silence for a few seconds. Then she reached for the whiskey bottle and poured herself a glass. โYou donโt have to constantly remind me of my mistake, Nik. Believe me, youโve done an excellent job over the last few centuries of making sure I never forget it.โ She stepped up beside Klaus at the window and looked down at New Orleans as well. โAnd Iโm not asking you to run away from it.โ Rebekah took a sip. โQuite the opposite. Iโve watched Mikael chase us from one place to the next for long enough. Iโm just as sick of it as you are.โ Her gaze wandered over the city streets.
โNew Orleans was our home. We built this city together. And if you want it back, I wonโt stand in your way.โ Then she turned to Klaus. โBut thatโs exactly why you should finally start using your damn brain before you declare war on everyone.โ She tapped his whiskey glass lightly. โIf our enemies are joining forces, itโs because they fear you, yes. But fear makes people dangerous. Desperate enemies do downright stupid things.โ At the mention of Marcel, her expression changed briefly.
โAnd Marcel isnโt just any opponent, Nik. You raised him. I loved him. We both know he wonโt give up this city without a fight.โ
Rebekah clinked her bottle against Katherineโs glass and shot the man an amused glance as his marriage apparently fell apart right then and there over the phone. โOn his porch? Katherine, judging by the look on his face, heโll be lucky if his stuff isnโt already scattered all over the lawn by the time he gets home.โ She took a sip of champagne and leaned back contentedly.
โAnd now you want to pay him a visit, too?โ Rebekah laughed softly. โOf course you do. Why settle for a little marital crisis when Katherine Pierce herself can show up and make the chaos complete? All right, then, letโs go.โ
