Unison is an attempt to resolve the challenges with programming that arise from the way we represent our code bases as linear strings of characters (grammar-structured text files).
Simultaneously, Unison is also trying to build upon and improve the way that functional programmers approach the architecture and implementation of web-based business applications.
From the point of view of a computer scientist, I love what Unison is doing and think there is a very fertile ground to explore in the space of structured functional programming languages, including programs as values, immutable functions, distributed computing, and much more.
From the point of view of a business person, however, Unison is attempting to do far too much, in ways that are extremely disruptive to how companies build software today, and without a killer use case that can force companies to adopt the technology.
To use Unison, you must be willing to adopt functional programming, learn a Haskell-like syntax, learn a new programming language quite different than all the others.
Although Unison is disruptive in good ways (structured code versus textual code), those ways have drawbacks and economically small benefits. Worse still, Unison is disruptive in bad ways.
With Unison, you don't store your program as text files in a Git repo, like you do with every other successful programming language ever invented. So you have to throw away a huge amount of tooling, ranging from code review tools to code coverage tools to even whole platforms like Git, which are built around code stored as grammar-structured text files.
The amount of resources necessary to create a parallel ecosystem around structured code are mind-boggling, and there is no economic incentive for this parallel ecosystem to arise unless the benefits vastly outweigh the costs for some initial target market.
Unison is the textbook classic definition of "boiling the ocean". One can indeed boil the ocean, but it takes the energy of a small star and a lot of time, and a lot of companies who look at Unison are not going to find that the benefits outweigh the costs.
Finally, let's take a look at the claim that Unison will rewrite distributed programming: Unison does make some types of distributed programming easier, but my view here is that (a) Unison is a LONG way away from showing any performance improvement on any task in distributed computation (tasks done today with Unison are likely to get slower by orders of magnitude compared to conventional techniques), and (b) Unison is solving the problem of executing code on remote nodes, which is not a particularly interesting distributed problem compared to, for example, problems of reliable computation in large-scale networks or distributed consensus.
Distributed programming is not likely to be a killer use case for Unison. In fact, even though there are clearly several different areas where Unison's feature set might be useful, I cannot identify any killer use case that can overcome all the drawbacks that come with Unison being so inherently disruptive (in bad ways).
It's my view that Unison will not be successful as a mainstream programming language, although its exploration of the landscape of structured code representation will be useful, and it may inspire features in other programming languages, or possibly libraries and frameworks in more mainstream programming languages.
It's possible to imagine a world where all code is structured, but that world has some drawbacks compared to our own, and I don't really see a path from getting from our world to that world. But it's fun to imagine what that world might look like, and Unison helps us do that today.

Me han preguntado constantemente estos días, si voy a ser parte del concierto virtual del 20 de Julio. Tristemente No, no estoy de moda por estos días, no he sido parte de la "rosca"... No pasa nada, yo sigo creando, creyendo.
