Burmese pythons aren’t native to Florida.

They were brought here through the exotic pet trade in the 1970s–80s. Many owners released them when the snakes got too big, and Hurricane Andrew in 1992 destroyed a breeding facility, releasing hundreds more into the Everglades.

These invasive giants have caused catastrophic declines in native wildlife — some mammal populations dropped 80–100%.

About 27,000 pythons have been removed from Florida since 2020 via various programs, according to state authorities. But plenty more need to be eradicated.

Last year’s grand prize winner was Taylor Stanberry who pocketed $10,000 for catching the most pythons during the 10-day Challenge event. She caught 60 pythons and set a record for the event last year.

“My husband Rhett and I are out every night looking for pythons,” Stanberry tells Outdoor Life. “It’s hatching season now, and the baby snakes are just now starting to show.”

Stanberry says the Challenge timing is ideal for getting lots of young snakes, because removing large numbers of pythons is the goal of the event.

“Last year when I won, I was fortunate to locate a couple nests of baby pythons,” says the 30-year-old wildlife expert from Naples, Florida. “At one snake nest I caught 31 baby pythons and another night I caught 14 babies at a different nest.”

After another rebuke by SCOTUS (his 3rd loss before the high court in his ignominious career) in the immunity decision, Jack Smith was forced to cut 9 pages and one unindicted co-conspirator from his original J6 indictment.

He went back to a DC grand jury in August 2024 and voila! Got a superseding indictment on the exact same 4 counts in the original indictment.

In his underhanded way to circumvent SCOTUS’ presidential immunity guidance, Smith then referred to the president as a “candidate” for president—like he was going to pull one over on SCOTUS when the new indictment headed back to the high court. “See he was a candidate not a sitting president so immunity framework doesn’t apply!”
