I just re-watched LA Confidential last month for the first time since it came out. I had forgotten how good it was.
I immediately read one of the other books in that series, the Black Dahlia. I read American Tabloid ages ago.
Ellroy is really good. Much rougher and earthier and bloodier than Michael Connelly, who is otherwise fairly similar. They both excel at making Los Angeles into a character in itself.
