On Sunday morning we were already running late for church when I walked upstairs and saw a thick yellow puddle outside my son’s door.
If you’ve got young kids, you know that nothing good ever comes in that color.
I looked at him and asked, “What is this?”
He stared at the floor and whispered, “Eggs.”
At first I was annoyed. Why in the world would he bring eggs to his room? And because we were late, my patience was thin. So instead of reacting, I walked away for a minute to breathe.
When I came back, I got down on his level and said calmly, “Buddy… what happened up here?”
He looked up at me with complete seriousness:
“Daddy, I kept them in my drawer for two days but they didn’t hatch… and when I checked on them, I accidentally dropped them.”
He was trying to hatch refrigerator eggs.
My frustration instantly turned into laughter.
And when I laughed, I watched his whole body relax. His guard dropped. We were able to talk about why eggs don’t belong in bedrooms without crushing his imagination.
It taught me something I never want to forget as a parent:
Kids aren’t trying to make our lives harder.
They’re learning, testing, imagining, exploring.
Our job isn’t to kill that curiosity to save a few minutes of convenience.
Our job is to guide them patiently so their creativity grows, not shrinks.
Let them be kids. Correct them but don’t crush them because their wonder is a gift worth protecting.

Leyton’s assistant volleyball coach Kali Miller had a baby the Monday of state volleyball and named it after @merbson ♥️
The best ever!! So grateful for all Coach Shaw has done for me and the community I grew up in. He is the definition of “Be a good human” and I’m so lucky to have been taught and coached by him!
Saw this from @Sidney_Raiders earlier today about Coach Tyler Shaw for the Sidney GBB program.
A+ human being, A+ educator, and an A+ coach.
Shaw appreciation thread:
Norm attended his first jr. high PE class today- he was a little shy at first but warmed up quickly. 10/10 enjoyed all the pets and “good boy” compliments he received... he did mention the PE teacher was kind of a hard ass though..
Its a little strange that the dog can’t ever hear me yelling his name when he is doing something he isn’t supposed to be doing in the yard but miraculously wakes from a dead sleep every time the fridge door opens 🤔
Emerson, my 11 year old, is on a bit of a wild ride with the @USPS and our local mail carrier, Doug.
And, I think there’s a deeper message to it all.
First, the backstory...
One step forward, two steps backward. Our path to becoming Hemingfordians isn’t necessarily going off without a hitch, but for all the times I had whoopies, it feels good my dad was behind this one 😂😂
If you are considering giving your S/O a haircut this quarantine because they can’t go to the salon or barber shop, just let them grow out their hair 😂😂😂
