Mamdani is right. Reagan was wrong. "I'm from the government and I'm here to help" is not "scary." What about if you're lost in a forest? What if your house is on fire? Public sector workers are incredibly useful in some of our most difficult situations. Government is good.
Happy birthday to the great Amy Goodman of @democracynow, one of the most important journalists of our era.
Today we publish a new interview with Amy and the filmmakers behind a new documentary about her life's work:

One of the most devastating and beautiful pieces of journalism I've ever read. "What is rendered unknowable" in the most violent of absences.

Ms. Rachel reminds us that meaningful change often begins with how we nurture and teach the next generation. Through language, encouragement, and inclusive learning, she has created space for children and caregivers to feel seen, supported, and empowered. That work reflects a powerful truth: education rooted in care can help shape a more just and compassionate world. At The King Center, we firmly believe creating the Beloved Community starts with how we value and guide our children. #MLK #WomensHistoryMonth #BelovedCommunity #MsRachel
“Every empire, however, tells itself and the world that it is unlike all other empires, that its mission is not to plunder and control but to educate and liberate.”

Honored that The Journalist's Resource reposted one of my recent Substack posts, specifically my discussion of five key reports that I encourage everyone to actually READ read, not just skim. :) Check it out below:

A 79-year-old Cuban asylum seeker with worsening dementia, who uses a wheelchair, has been detained in Eloy, AZ for nine months, despite her family's pleas to let them care for her. @TucsonStar https://t.co/7m7cwQKUIk
Had a great conversation with @NPRCodeSwitch about recent changes to the treatment of Cubans in the U.S. immigration system.
Grateful for their close read and interest in my @PublicBooks piece. And a treat to appear alongside @Adita_Ferrer.

Judge Tana Lin ruled ICE medical neglect turned detention into unconstitutional punishment. A Filipino detainee who begged for hospital care for months lost part of his foot after delayed treatment and denied antibiotics.

A prison built for gangs is now holding migrants. People escaping violence are being put into the very conditions they fled. We are moving in the wrong direction.

The official Department of Justice recruitment page is saying the quiet part out loud: they don’t care about law, they only care about deportations. Flagrant. False. Possibly illegal. This is why many of us have advocated for an independent immigration court for years.
Louisiana’s new law says police can go to jail if they don’t work with ICE. That means victims and witnesses in immigrant communities will be even more afraid to call for help.
