Keeping a living root in the soil for as long as possible is the 4th principle of soil health. If you want good soil structure and nutrient cycling, you have to feed the soil biology! You do that with living roots. Cover crops keep roots in the soil long after harvest.
The second principle of soil health is to limit disturbance of the soil. This allows soil biology to thrive and produce good soil structure! This structure increases water infiltration, helping farms and ranches withstand floods and droughts!
Healthy soil has much higher rates of water infiltration and storage, which improves water quality and makes the landscape more resilient to drought and floods!
The first principle of soil health is to keep the soil covered! By keeping crop residue or other plant matter on the soil surface, you protect it from wind and water erosion and moderate soil temps. You also provide food for soil biological life, which aids in nutrient cycling.
South Dakota will celebrate Soil Health Awareness Day on March 12th. For this entire week, SDSHC will be celebrating soil health and discussing the soil health principles and benefits! We hope you'll help us spread awareness of this important issue!
