@BenRiensche Is the value out of control? USDA is only a small part of a large and complex market. We have an equal amount of buyers and sellers at current price points.
@broketard@gwiesefarms@AdamLasch1 From a 30,000’ view you’re probably right. The land will be farmed by someone, and we will have boom/bust cycles. I don’t see that changing.
Damien and Vance to a good job in this podcast explaining the issue. And at the end they don't offer a simple solution, because there isn't one. This is worth your time to listen IMO.

There would still be crop insurance. But IMO it would be more like hail insurance, & not widely used. Land would be cheaper to own & rent as risk will be built into the price. There wouldn’t be many marginal producers; some will be highly capitalized and sophisticated. There would also be a faction that will be a version of the hog integrators, where the land would be owned by investors, & the farmer would be contract labor. So 2 types of farmers IMO.
2027 wheat planting is getting close to the end for us. We ran short of seed due to later than expected plant dates, thus increasing the seeding rate. It wasn’t easy to find the seed we wanted as it was all gone. YOY acres should be up in my area.
I’m fine with market dynamics. And I’m fine making adjustments to crop insurance. But I don’t have any influence on those decisions. I adjust to whatever comes my way. In essence that is market dynamics.
What I am against is the 3 of you that just want everything to burn. There are better ways to correct the system.
I understand your pain. I want land values to decrease also, as I would like to buy some more.
My 1st real bank job was in a bank that went broke in the 80’s. I came onboard after they cleaned house. You don’t want to go through the pain of decreasing land values. I saw what it did. It sucked.
I’m with you on no more ad hoc payments. They’re dumb. But crop insurance being tossed out? I will disagree with you there. Can there be some adjustments on crop insurance? Sure, I am open to ideas.
Good point. But it’s a different biz with different underwriting.
I still maintain crop insurance is the great equalizer. There is no crop insurance in Brazil & only Mega farms exist.
IMO taking the government totally out will create opportunities. But it also opens up consolidation at a rate twice as fast as now. In the end, capitalism always wins & the small or weaker businesses don’t last.
@MatthewCKrueger I just had one of the companies I do biz with give me one of these. I haven’t used it yet it, but it’s definitely sturdy enough for farm use.
@mikeadsit@DamianPMason If the Dems win the midterms, the outgoing Republicans will be lame duck and won’t care if the debt ceiling increases.. Thoughts on that?
@FoulkShay I must be strange. All we want is best price. We load up on a full years chem use in the spring. When season is over we return what we don’t use.
All the rest is fluff we don’t want to pay for.
The only item I will add from 35 years of doing this.
Margins have always been tight. The 2020-2023 run was an anomaly.
Farmers are notorious for bidding the profit out of everything & doing it for nothing or very tight margins.
Nobody really makes any money at this gig until they’ve been at it for 25 plus years. At that point the growth has stopped, infrastructure is built & working capital is comfortable. I watched my dad go through it & I’ve been through it.
Government money or not, I don’t see this changing.
