The resignation of the Education Minister is an acknowledgment that accountability in a democracy cannot be indefinitely evaded. It comes after weeks of determined, peaceful voices raised by students, parents and citizens across the country who refused to be ignored.

It also comes after far too many young Indians faced unnecessary police brutality and force for exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest. That should concern every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.

But accountability does not end with a resignation. The deeper failures that brought us here must now be addressed through transparent reforms, institutional responsibility and a commitment to ensuring that no young Indian’s future is jeopardised again.

The students who marched, spoke out and peacefully persisted deserve to know that this is the beginning of reform, not the end of the story.

Those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared.

VIDEO | As Congress MP Shashi Tharoor arrives at the protest site at Jantar Mantar, he says, "The Leader of the Opposition being dragged off physically and put in detention and other MPs as well and now frankly this is something that has moved the hearts and consciences of everybody in our country. I wanted to stand in solidarity with the students who are protesting here so I've come to see them.,, I think it's a democratic right to protest. It's non-violent protest. No one is trying to do anything that that is against the law. So I don't understand why the government is behaving with such insensitivity. The brutal lathi charge, the horrendous behaviour of the police and today the physical dragging away of the LoP, Rahul Gandhi. All of this I think has caused a lot of dismay to law-abiding citizens of this country."

He further says, "This is not how we expect our government to deal with protests, with dissidents, with people who are demanding justice. These young students after all they worked hard for their exams, they studied hard and they were betrayed by the system. They were betrayed by the government that runs the system and they have every right to protest. The government should be accountable. The government cannot conceal its lack of accountability behind the police action and that too very brutal police action."

The forceful detention of @RahulGandhi, @Priyanka Gandhi, @yadavakhilesh and other Opposition leaders during their protest is a severe affront to our democracy. Physical aggression against a peaceful protest is completely unjustifiable. An accountable government listens to dissent; it does not silence it through police action. This is not the India our Constitution envisages! We must never allow this appalling conduct to become the new normal.
