“Cristiano Ronaldo was shouting ‘I’m back’ after scoring against Uzbekistan… I was wondering where he was tonight against Colombia.”
Just realized the Europeans will be present to watch Joey Chestnut inhale 84 pork pistols on live television in honor of our nation’s independence.
That one will break them completely.
Pandas should not have made it. They only eat bamboo, nothing else. Females can get pregnant for just a couple of days each year, and newborn cubs are about the size of a stick of butter. By the 1980s, only 1,100 were left in the wild.
A massive bamboo die-off across Sichuan between 1975 and 1983 starved at least 250 of them to death, while logging crews cut through their forests. About half of panda births are twins, but in the wild only one cub usually survives. For decades, most captive male pandas would not mate naturally, so breeders had to rely on artificial insemination. Even that worked only about 1 in 4 times.
China decided to save them anyway. Logging in panda reserves was banned in 1988. The number of protected reserves grew from 13 in 1998 to 67 today, now covering close to two-thirds of all wild pandas. The Chengdu breeding base went from 18 pandas in 1994 to 237 by 2023. Sichuan alone spent around 59 million dollars building six forest corridors to link up separated panda areas.
In 2021, China combined dozens of these reserves into the Giant Panda National Park. It covers more than 27,000 square kilometers across three provinces. That is over three times the size of Yellowstone. The park protects about 72 percent of all wild pandas and shelters around 8,000 other species, including snow leopards and golden snub-nosed monkeys.
The breeding problem cracked too. By the 2020s, around 70 percent of captive pandas were being born from natural mating instead of artificial insemination. Genetic modeling now shows the captive population can keep 90 percent of its diversity for the next 200 years.
In September 2016, the IUCN, the global group that decides which animals are endangered, moved pandas off the endangered list. China made it official in July 2021. The work is not done. Climate change could wipe out 35 percent of their bamboo forests by 2100.
Forty years ago, the question was whether pandas would survive. The 2,708 alive today are the answer.
