Pritzker beat Bailey by 33 points in suburban Cook and decisively in every collar county, including three– DuPage, Kane, and McHenry– where Pritzker had lost to Rauner in 2018.

In 2022, Bailey received about 120,000 fewer Chicago metro votes than Rauner in his 2018 loss. That was after Rauner had repelled his base and all but gave up his re-election bid en route to being blown out.

It was decidedly a messenger problem. Messages on the SAFE-T Act, taxes, school choice resonated. For example, Pritzker reversed course during the campaign and expressed an openness to amending the SAFE-T Act (which he subsequently did post-election, admittedly of the perfume-on-a-pig variety) because it was hurting him. Pritzker also hedged on tax credit scholarships during the campaign and dumped any motion he would again seek to graduate the state income tax. But Bailey couldn't carry those issues or any other. He was a tone-deaf gaffe-machine and unwilling to learn. A bad combo.

This time around, he has none of the attributes he had last time (donor and grassroots support) but retains all of the deficiencies that are directly attributable to him.

He is solely living off residual awareness from four years ago. His supporters come from two camps: (1) those who lack the intellectual curiosity to investigate the race, and (2) those who are baffled by the plot twists in Jim Varney movies.

In sum, to renominate Bailey is to concede not only defeat but partisan dignity.

And, as usual, there is a catch.

It relies on nearly $600 million in new tax and fee hikes, plus extremely risky gimmicks, including overly optimistic revenue projections and fund transfers.

Here is what's in the fine print of Pritzker's FY2027 budget proposal:

🚩$139M in fund "sweeps" (which put backdoor pressure on your local property taxes)

🚩$269M in corporate tax hikes

🚩$120M in casino tax hikes

Illinoisans already pay the highest state and local tax burden in the U.S. Relying on $1 billion in "updated revenue assumptions" to balance the books is a massive gamble.

When rosy revenue projections fall short, who usually ends up footing the bill? The taxpayers.

You could significantly reduce them through having more fathers in the home, by having more armed guards in front of schools. We should have a honest and clear reductionist view of gun violence, but we should not have a utopian one.

You will never live in a society when you have an armed citizenry and you won't have a single gun death. That is nonsense. It's drivel. But I am, I, I — I think it's worth it. I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal. It is rational. Nobody talks like this. They live in a complete alternate universe.

So then, how do you reduce? Very simple. People say, oh, Charlie, how do you stop school shootings? I don't know. How did we stop shootings at baseball games? Because we have armed guards outside of baseball games. That's why. How did we stop all the shootings at airports? We have armed guards outside of airports. How do we stop all the shootings at banks?
