India Converted Half of Asia Without an Army.
One of the largest cultural expansions in history was carried out almost entirely by merchants waiting for the monsoon wind to change.
Over roughly a thousand years India gave much of Asia its religions, its epics, its scripts and its ideas of kingship, using convoys timed to the monsoon's twice-yearly reversal rather than armies. Buddhism set aside caste and the food laws that made travel among strangers difficult, and it moved east in the holds of merchant ships until, by one count, China had thirty thousand monasteries and close to two million monks. The courts of Southeast Asia adopted Sanskrit, Indian law and Indian statecraft by choice, judging it the best system on offer to a king who wanted to look legitimate at home and abroad. The former Thai capital Ayutthaya took its name from Ayodhya, the city of Rama. Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument on earth, is a working diagram of the Indian cosmos, its moat standing for the ocean that surrounds Mount Meru.
The era's other great power took a different route. China's Confucian order required a foreign ruler to acknowledge the emperor as his superior before exchange could happen, tribute, not trade. The ports of the region answered to Chinese demand while its temples, script and kingship were Indian-influenced.
It wasn't wholly peaceful. The Indianised kingdoms fought each other readily enough. What the pattern lacked, for the better part of a thousand years, was an Indian conqueror.
I've written up the full story, with sources and further reading. Link to essay in the comments below.
This is beautiful. All y’all who want to trash HBCU bands, imagine how talented you must be to learn a new song and choreography and carry it off flawlessly. In two weeks.
Video of James Talarico from the Headquarters TikTok account currently has over SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND LIKES with multiple comments calling for him to run for president.
Yes but it itself is an oxymoron. We (the USA) are asking a 18,22, or 25 yr old (BA, MA or PhD/JD opportunist) to pay ~300k per degree but only before, with certainty, if they state they actually, truly want to go back past a Door they’ve waited for their whole lives? Proving ties with one’s home country is different: “I want to go back every 4 months to see family vs. I want to take my 4 years and live in Togo forever because I’m starting a Thinktank with the government’s help.” If the threshold behind 214b is property, a sufficient bank balance and other “heavy” commitments to Home, flip it and the majority of us Americans wouldn’t qualify to prove we’re going back to America if it was the other way around (and I was applying to Bocconi.) I KNOW I wouldn’t qualify on paper , living a (law) student life as I do. If the argument is that it’s our education they should be paying for , not “America,” I would argue then why is the average Harvard F1 entrant choosing Harvard over Oxford— when Oxford is 1/3 the price, has twice the history, and is likely closer in flight time to their home country. You, as an F1 student, are paying so much to leave Home, that USCIS giving out 214b denials on failing-to-prove-ties basis (that a student who is obviously hoping to take their education and get a job to then rent a nice apartment and find a family (or bring one) can prove that “actually I’m really just taking this super expensive education and gonna go back to Cairo/Bogota/Bangalore/ Minsk/ Lahore/ Jakarta/ etc” ) is like a dog chasing its own tail. It’s understandable, but not in the logical sense; more in the pitiful sense of “oh how helpless we are to change the dog’s Mind.” Here, I hope USCIS does not remain said dog for much longer bc students are what drive this country. Academia is what leads to corporate success. Without discourse we would be deer ; graceful yet ignorant— destined to get hit by the very thing we exist around each day.
Thank you for shopping at our legal dispensary! Your total is ten dollars. That’ll just be twelve dollars, so we’ll draw twenty dollars from your account, give you back five in cash of course, take three, and return one. Then you just spin around three times,
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
Lamar Jackson says he watched friends chase fast money while he was playing the long game and counting how many years it would take him to reach the NFL
“I’m seeing my friends who I was growing up with who I was playing football with… Just throw their life away for fast money and stuff like that. They used to tell me ‘Oh, you talk too much’. Because I used to always speak about football and positivity stuff. They didn’t want to hear that.”
“Now it’s like… They’d rather hear it now because I’m Lamar Jackson. But I’ve been speaking about it. Everybody just wasn’t listening. I was already seeing what was going on. I wish we could go back in time and y’all could see what I was seeing. Because I always looked at life like, I counted years.”
“Like I would think… ‘How many years does it take to get to the league?’ They’re saying… ‘You do three years in college.’ I said… ‘I’m doing three years.’ I’m not doing four. I’m not trying to go fifth year. I’m doing three years because I’m going to make sure my family is good.”
“If you’re coming from a place like where I come from, don’t try to be like the guys around you. Don’t look up to the stuff that looks like it’s fun… Because sometimes it gets you in trouble.”
“It’s sacrificing. ‘Man, I can’t have fun right now. I’ve got to get my family right. I can’t do this right now. I can’t mess up.’ Forget the fast money. I’ve got to think about longevity.”
“You can get locked up and do five years for $1,000. That money gone. It’s gone. You’re like… ‘Man, I just did that for $1,000…’ And I could have waited five years and I would’ve had $10 million.”
“That’s why I’m where I’m at right now. That’s how I used to think. My mom working… She’s busting her behind. It’s me, my brother and my two sisters at home. I’m the oldest…”
“So I’ve got to make sure everybody right. And it’s like… Man, I can’t wait, but I’ve got to wait. That’s the sacrifice. I’ve got to be patient. People don’t look at it like that. It’s like… ‘Man, I need that money right now.’ But you don’t need that money right now. Just wait.”
