"Certainly of Luther, Calvin, and the other standard-bearers of the Sectarians, it can deservedly be said that they are sons without a father, disciples without a master, who wished to be born from themselves."
— Vincent Contenson, O.P.

After a French bishop had accused St. Thomas of denying the Immaculate Conception, our Angelic Doctor appeared to him in a dream and said that he had never rejected it such a sublime privilege to the Blessed Virgin.

"Happy is the man who can throw off the weight of every care and recollect himself in holy contrition. Happy is the man who casts from him all that can stain or burden his conscience."

The Imitation of Christ, Book I. Chapter XXI.
@Nicholai_Korea Are you intellectually deficient? The debate prompt was ‘Disprove Orthodoxy’. Why would they shift the burden onto him by presenting such a low tier argument?
— Cardeal Charles Journet, L’Église du Verbe Incarné, vol. I, c. X, § I, 1.
I like how the Oriental Orthodox are low key entering the apologetic scene. And this guy did a great job.
It's interesting that when faced with cracks in his system, Ryan has to deploy the ad hoc trichotomy of three kinds of faith: justifying faith, 'Christian faith in general', and the charismatic gift of faith.
Ryan needs three separate realities so that what's true of one (faith without love profits nothing) doesn't touch the other (faith alone justifies).
There is no reading that places Jesus' (Our Lord, God and Savior) "mustard seed" faith as some limited, other reality.
No, it's faith that can move mountains and as this OO gentleman points out, it's contrasted with unbelief.
Also - another interesting point I noticed - Ryan says:
"Faith was the means. It's the instrumental cause of how you receive justification."
I don't know if he knows what that term means.
An instrumental cause is something the principal agent wields eg. the painter wields the brush.
So whose instrument is your faith? If Gods, how does God wield your interior act on you? If yours, you're justifying yourself by your own act.
This is why BAPTISM is the instrumental cause of justification because God is the one acting on you through baptism (the instrument by which sanctifying grace is infused). And notice how we receive it, don't do it ourselves. We merely present ourselves to receive having the proper disposition of faith, repentance, and a will turned toward God.
Whereas if FAITH is the instrumental cause, this makes it so that it is your work!
“If I, a less learned man, were to follow the opinion of St. Thomas against a reason which seemed to me more probable; who would deny that I would act more prudently if, suspending my own opinion, I deferred to so great an authority?”

"If you are wise, then, know that you have been created for the glory of God and your own eternal salvation. This is your goal; this is the center of your life; this is the treasure of your heart." (St. Robert Bellarmine)
"On the last day, when the general examination takes place, there will be no question at all on the text of Aristotle, the aphorisms of Hippocrates, or the paragraphs of Justinian. Charity will be the whole syllabus." - St. Robert Bellarmine
Elizabeth Anscombe and Peter Geach, a couple exemplary for their rigid orthodoxy, sheer brainpower, and that look that says “No bullshit, please, we’re Catholic philosophers.”
Plato's final and clear statement homosexuality: it is "unnatural", "godly fear and love of honour" seeks the love of souls not bodies, that homosexuality is "by no means holy, but hated of God and most shamefully shameful."
(Laws VIII, 841d; 838-839d)
The idea that one may remain in another denomination simply because it possesses valid sacraments is refuted by Matthias Scheeben:
“It is a unity of faith in the whole of Revelation, and not in certain parts of it; for to reject even a single revealed doctrine is to reject the authority of God (supra, §38).”
"Mary, on the contrary, co-operated morally in our redemption by her faith in Gabriel's words and by her free consent to the mystery of the redemptive Incarnation and to all the sufferings it entailed for her Son and for herself."
