The farmer alone can not guarantee food security. The farm alone can not secure food security. Even if all the land in Nigeria were turned into a farm, it will won't guarantee food security.

Food security is a systemic approach, and the farmer alone can't correct a broken system.

Until we prioritise food security and fix the broken system, the farmer will do all the work, get all the blame, and yet hunger will remain.

I had to consult agribusiness coaches to get the framing of this post right.

CONTEXT AFTER CONSULT ON MY TWEET:
The farmer is not the bottleneck in Nigeria's food security crisis - the system is.

Even if every hectare of land in Nigeria were perfectly cultivated tomorrow, hunger would still persist because the real problems sit far beyond the farm gate:

Post-harvest losses: Nigeria loses 40 - 50% of some crops (tomatoes, yam, etc.) between farm and market due to bad roads, no storage, no processing, and terrible logistics A farmer in Benue can’t get perishable produce to Lagos in good condition.

Broken value chains: Middlemen often take more profit than the farmer. Farmers sell cheap at harvest, and consumers buy expensive months later.

Input access and cost: Fertiliser, improved seeds, and mechanisation are either unavailable, adulterated, or priced out of reach. The 2023 - 2025 fertiliser crisis (prices up 300–500%) wiped out margins for millions of farmers.

Insecurity: Farmers in the North-East, North-West, and Middle-belt are displaced or killed. You can’t farm when you don't have control over your land. Over 2 million hectares of farmland are now inaccessible.

Policy inconsistency: Subsidy removals, import bans one day and floods the next, multiple taxation, forex chaos - farmers can’t plan when government policy changes every season.

No processing ecosystem: We export raw cocoa, cashew, sesame at giveaway prices, and then import chocolate, juice, and cosmetics made from them. Value addition is almost zero. I really wait for the hope offered by the SAPZ zone, as it will be a game changer.

Urban demand vs rural supply: Lagos alone needs ~25,000 metric tonnes of tomatoes monthly. No single state can supply that reliably because the cold chain and transport system simply don’t exist.

The farmer is doing 90% of the work with 10% of the enabling environment. Blaming the farmer for hunger is like blaming a footballer for losing when the coach never shows up, the pitch is flooded, and the goalposts keep moving.

Real food security will come when we fix:
Rural roads and electricity
Storage and agro-processing zones in every senatorial district
Farmer protection (insurance, ranger forces, conflict resolution)
Consistent, long-term agricultural policy (not seasonal drama)
Credit and inputs at single-digit interest
Market reforms that let farmers capture more value

Until then, the farmer will keep waking up at 4 a.m., risking it all and floods, borrowing at 30 - 40% interest, losing half the harvest on the road, selling the rest for peanuts - and still get called “lazy” when tomatoes hit ₦5000 per kg in the city.

The system is broken. The farmer is not the problem.
