The Chief Constable of Essex Police said it was “madness” - the furore after two officers visited my house on Remembrance Sunday.

He described it as “just a five-minute conversation with a journalist”.

There is no “just” about a visit from the police. It is deliberately intimidating and an attack on free speech.

I was accused of a serious offence under the Public Order Act for posting a tweet, a year earlier. No one thinks the tweet came anywhere near the threshold for criminal investigation.

The CPS threw the case out but the process is the punishment.

In the same week, a 15-year-old boy was robbed at knifepoint a few miles from me. Terrified, he called the police and was told it was no longer a live incident!

Spare us the selective sainthood, Rajdeep. While you’re busy taking a bow to Bombay HC for saying citizens aren’t “slaves of the Indian government” over a few anti-BJP slogans, let’s recall what Calcutta High Court actually observed when dissent was being muzzled under your favourite Mamata regime.

In the 2021 post-poll violence cases, a five-judge bench of Calcutta HC castigated the Mamata government:
• Police were fully aware of the violence but took no punitive or preventive action.
• The state government was “caught on the wrong foot” for failing to create any atmosphere of trust to rehabilitate victims.
• “Such instances, even if held to be isolated, are not good or healthy for democracy.”
The court had to order a CBI probe into murders, rapes and gruesome attacks on opposition workers because the state police couldn’t be trusted. NHRC report (which the Calcutta HC took on record) bluntly stated:
“Bengal has the law of the ruler, not the rule of law.”
That’s not just “criminalising dissent”, that’s state-enabled goonda raj to crush anyone who voted against TMC. Houses burnt, women raped, opposition workers hunted for the crime of dissent. Where was your “take a bow to judiciary” thread then, Rajdeep? Or does the Constitution only matter when the target is BJP?
Your outrage is as selective as your sources. Keep the performative “very important” tweets coming… the rest of us remember the bodies and the silence.

In my career, I have interacted with many hardened criminals and murder accused. Most of them show some sign of regret, grief, or emotional conflict, particularly where the victim is innocent.

What is striking in this case is the chilling absence of any such emotion. The allegations speak of a crime planned and executed in cold blood, followed by the conduct that is equally cold and remorseless.
