This is the fascinating thing about gig work. The barrier to entry is low. The work itself can be hard day-to-day, but starting is easy, it gives people a quick, makeshift way to earn when they need money.

I saw this clearly during COVID. A lot of people shifted to gig work almost overnight.

It’s easy to dismiss it as exploitative and yes, there’s plenty of room to improve but in its current form, gig work has been a quiet miracle for India.

In a country with a severe shortage of jobs for the low-skilled workforce, it filled a gap that very few systems ever have.
