Vel barely reacted. The warmth of the hug helped him relax for a few moments, and that was enough for emotions to rise in his throat.
He closed his eyes and hugged her tight, trembling. He didn't cry, because he couldn't. -
She turned his face gently to look into his eyes and searched them.
"Velhanor...it's me. Ember. Your friend. You don't have to put up a facade with me. You don't have to pretend it doesn't hurt."
With that, she pulled him into a hug and simply held him tight, almost as if
-
Velhanor smiled gently, or as close to it as he could muster at the moment.
"Those responsible are no longer alive. Their deaths were very painful, or I like to think so."
He looked away.
"And that was a long time ago."
"Who hurt them?"
She asked quietly. She hated to see the people she cared about in pain. The pain in his eyes was something she didn't want to see.
"Tell me who is responsible and I'll find them."
Vel opened his eyes, accepting the glass of water.
"You already are. Talk to me about anything. It doesn't matter the subject. Just... talk."
He watched her for a moment, his gaze much blanker than usual.
"Just don't let me think about bad things."
She sighs. She figured it would be something grim.
"I figured it was either something unpleasant or some sort of business."
She serves two glasses of water and sits next to him, handing him one.
"I'm really sorry for your loss, Vel. What can I do to help?"
-
The warlock sat on one of the sofas, curled up more than usual.
"I don't want to disappoint you, but I didn't dress like this to see you. It'sβ¦more complicated than that."
He leaned back on the couch and closed his eyes.
"I just got back from a funeral."
Velhanor glanced at the mini bar, shaking his head.
"No thanks. I already drank more than I should have today."
Normally, he would have checked her out in her new clothes for a long moment, but his head was too full to even summon up the routine banter.
--
"Well, I'm probably going to be here all night so I can keep you company."
She looked towards her paperwork, annoyed.
"I do apologize for my appearance I umm...just got back from Guardian duties."
Her armor changed in an instant to a simple black tank top and black sweats.
-
-
"Thanks. I didn't want to be alone today. It's a tough day."
His expression hardened as he said the words. Vel hated needing other people. It was one of the most irritating unavoidable facts of existence.
"I hope I'm not disturbing you."
Vel looked relieved when she opened the door, as if part of him hadn't expected that attitude. He had his guards up very high, especially after recent events.
He gave her a soft smile before stepping inside. The warlock's eyes roamed the office.
-
Ember had just gotten to her office after a long day of Guardian duties. Her armor was splattered with blood; she had forgotten to change out of it when she saw the paperwork she needed to do.
She walks over to the door and opens it, freezing when she see Vel.
"Oh."
-
Velhanor did not usually take off his armor, but he had to that day. He was only wearing an ordinary business suit when he knocked on @DeathIncarnate_ 's door, late in the night
"Ember? Sorry about the hour. May I come in?"
He read the message, looking up at the book on the table in front of him. It was a tome of hive sigils, a long-standing project.
"Surely I can help, but maybe I should get some bigger guns if we're going to the Throne World. Give me the location and I'll meet you there."
Vel was sitting inside his ship, cleaning his silver hand cannon. He would see the message and photo out of the corner of his eye, flashing a soft smile before replying in a quick message.
"Always, Calli. I really needed a distraction. What's the problem this time?"
"Hm? Isn't that what friends do? They perform kind acts for each other and share terrible secrets they can't keep to themselves. It's just a matter of formality, don't think too much about it."
He transmaterialized a pen into his hand, scribbling a squiggly pattern in his-
