Lindsay Clancy sought help for months after her third baby was born, psychiatrists, ERs, a perinatal program, even five days in a psychiatric hospital.

She was prescribed over a dozen different psych medications, with constant changes.

Providers treated her for depression and anxiety. They never diagnosed the postpartum psychosis her defense later said was raging underneath.

I in no way condone what she did. Nothing justifies harming children.

But this tragedy must become a turning point. Postpartum psychosis is real, rare and deadly when missed.

It can steal a mother’s reality with hallucinations and voices tell her things to do, that are not real.

With proper care it is highly treatable. We need better screening and specialized support so no family faces this again.

My heart breaks for everyone involved. It really sucks!

Cora, Dawson, and Callan deserved to live.

Trying to understand whether severe mental illness or psychosis affected someone’s ability to understand reality or control their actions is not celebrating what happened. It is literally one of the central questions this jury is being asked to decide.

More than one thing can be true at the same time.

You can grieve three beautiful children whose lives were taken far too soon.

You can believe their deaths were horrific, heartbreaking, and unjustifiable.

And you can also believe that severe mental illness matters in a criminal trial, especially when the law specifically requires the jury to consider whether mental disease affected criminal responsibility.

Those beliefs do not contradict one another.

And calling women “insane,” “crazy,” "mentally unstable", “baby killer supporters,” and every other derogatory name you can think of, or telling them to off themselves, simply because they understand that distinction doesn't strengthen your argument. It only shows an unwillingness to have an actual conversation about the incredibly complicated intersection of mental illness, psychosis, tragedy, and criminal responsibility.

And frankly, watching women(myself included) be mocked, degraded, and attacked simply for acknowledging the seriousness of mental illness tells us something else:

Women’s mental health still has a LONG way to go.

We tell women to speak up. We tell mothers to ask for help. We tell them mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. But the moment the conversation becomes uncomfortable or complicated, suddenly words like “crazy” and “insane” are thrown around as insults.

That stigma is exactly why conversations about women’s mental health still matters.

But understanding why it exists is not the same as supporting what happened to Cora, Dawson, and Callan. Those children deserved their lives, and acknowledging the reality of severe mental illness does not take one ounce of that truth away from them.

But I also want us to keep having these uncomfortable conversations about MENTAL HEALTH, postpartum mental illness, psychosis, warning signs, access to treatment, and what happens when someone is desperately sick.

Because the goal shouldn't only be figuring out what to do after this horrific tragedy.

The goal should be recognizing the danger, intervening, and getting someone the right help BEFORE another family experiences an unimaginable tragedy.

That is why this conversation matters.

Not to excuse what happened.

Not to erase Cora, Dawson, and Callan.

But to do everything possible to make sure something like this NEVER happens again.

You don't have to agree with the insanity defense. But understanding why it exists is not the same as supporting what happened to these three beautiful children.

Their lives mattered. Mental health matters. Prevention matters.

Like I get that some people who have stronger retributive values find this sort of thing gross, but do the commentators not understand that they don't "support" her in that they think she didn't kill her children, they "support" raising awareness of post partum psychosis?

The outrage just seems like it's misunderstanding what they stand for on purpose.

And sure, you can find what they do stand for distasteful, I'd certainly wince if I saw my friend outside that courtroom, but pretending that these women actually "support" murdering your own children is... patently insane.
