Patients' Rights are Human Rights
The NHRC Charter of Patients' Rights lays out 17 rights every patient should know:
1. Right to Information: Every patient must be told about their illness, diagnosis, treatment, possible complications and expected costs in a language they understand.
2. Right to Records and Reports: Patients can access their case papers, investigation reports and discharge summary.
3. Right to Emergency Medical Care: Hospitals must provide basic emergency care without demanding advance payment.
4. Right to Informed Consent: Written consent must be taken after explaining the risks, before any potentially hazardous test or treatment.
