Ksh.8.2 billion drug consignment intercepted off Kenyan Coast destroyed in Mombasa

Security agencies in Kenya have destroyed methamphetamine valued at approximately Ksh.8.2 billion in Mombasa, nearly a year after the consignment was intercepted during a maritime operation in the Indian Ocean.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen oversaw the destruction on Thursday, September 24, at Bamburi Cement, where the narcotics were disposed of under court supervision after the completion of the required legal procedures.

The consignment was seized in October 2025 following a multi-agency operation targeting a vessel suspected of transporting narcotics along Kenya’s coastline.

The interception involved security agencies working to disrupt the movement of illegal drugs through the country’s maritime routes.

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin, senior officials from the National Police Service (NPS), and other stakeholders attended the destruction exercise.

Officers from different security and law-enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation, seizure, and subsequent handling of the narcotics.

Security was heightened around the destruction site in Mombasa as authorities carried out the exercise.

The presence of various agencies reflected the measures taken to secure the consignment and ensure that its disposal followed the required legal process.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the seizure and destruction resulted from a multi-agency operation involving both national and international partners.

The collaboration was part of efforts to prevent narcotics from entering Kenya and being transported through its territory.

The interception in October 2025 had involved a vessel suspected of carrying the drugs in the Indian Ocean, off the Kenyan coast.

Following the seizure, the relevant authorities proceeded with investigations and legal procedures before the court-supervised destruction.

Kenyan security agencies have continued to increase surveillance along the country’s maritime routes to tackle drug trafficking and other forms of organised crime.

The exercise in Mombasa marked the conclusion of the legal process surrounding the seized consignment, with senior security officials present during its destruction.
