Tariffs are a failed economic policy. But this is why dollar for dollar retaliatory tariffs will hurt - not help - Canada right now.

1. Will prompt a further tariff escalation by this U.S. President, thereby hurting Canadian (and U.S.) workers and businesses further.

2. Will result in cost increases for Canadian businesses that will make them even more uncompetitive.

3. Will drive inflation up for Canadian consumers.

Why would we punch our own Canadian businesses, workers and consumers in the face just because the U.S. is doing so to their own businesses, workers and consumers.

We Canadians should keep calm and carry on, diversify our trading relationships and export infrastructure, rejecting tariffs as the failed policy it is, and continuing to reach out to the majority of U.S. officials who think this trade war with Canada is idiotic just as we do.

Don’t give in to knee-jerk actions that feel good in the moment but only hurt ourselves. We need to be smarter not more tough guy-er.

After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today.

I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.
