The claim that there was no famine is historically inaccurate. What's truly shocking is the deliberate nature of British policy. While Ireland was exporting enough food to feed 18 million people annually, the British government continued these exports under military guard. The Poor Law Extension Act of 1847 deliberately forced starving Irish peasants onto workhouses where conditions were designed to be so appalling that people would avoid them at all costs. Trevelyan's 'providential' view that the famine was 'an effective mechanism for reducing surplus population' demonstrates a chilling intent. The evidence strongly suggests this wasn't mere negligence, but a calculated policy of depopulation that meets the criteria for genocide under international law
