Contrary to what is claimed in Wahhabi propaganda, the Islamic Republic of Iran is not based on medieval Shia theology, nor is its aim to spread Shiism throughout the world.

Rather, the Republic is largely inspired by the Pan-Islamist ideology developed by the Muslim Brotherhood and figures like Sayyid Qutb.

This ideology promotes cooperation between the world's Muslims of different sects. The aim of such cooperation is to preserve basic Islamic teachings, reestablish some maslaha-reformed version of the Sharia, and oppose Western/Israeli imperialism.
