One of the strangest things about the baseball throwing yips is that difficulty doesn't always behave logically.
A player can make the harder throw and struggle with the easy one.
That matters.
When a skill is clearly there but something begins interfering with the ability to access it automatically, more mechanical correction or more repetition may not address everything that is happening.
Very Good Mind works with athletes dealing with the yips and other performance problems that persist even when the athlete already knows how to perform the skill.
Performance-focused EMDR can address experiences and nervous-system responses that may still be influencing what happens in the present.
The yips are particularly maddening because they often happen to an athlete who already knows exactly how to perform the skill.
That's what makes them interesting to us at Very Good Mind.
When a throw, putt, serve, kick, or other automatic movement suddenly becomes unreliable, the natural response is to work harder on the movement itself.
But the nervous system is part of athletic performance too.
A skill can become connected with pressure, embarrassment, fear, a previous mistake, or the expectation that it will go wrong again. And once that happens, the athlete may begin approaching a familiar movement with an entirely different nervous-system response.
Very Good Mind works with athletes when something begins interfering with abilities they already have.

Medical clearance is a major part of returning to sport.
But it doesn't necessarily tell the whole story.
An athlete can complete rehabilitation, rebuild strength, pass the tests, and genuinely believe the professionals telling them they are ready.
Then they return to actual competition and discover that their body isn't responding with the same freedom they expected.
At Very Good Mind, we're interested in that gap.
The nervous system learns from injury too. Returning to the speed, contact, movement, and unpredictability of sport can bring an athlete back into circumstances their system has learned to associate with danger.
When the body has recovered but something is still interfering with the athlete's ability to use it freely, there may be more of the injury experience left to address.

Being cleared to return to sport can be an enormous milestone.
It can also make what happens next incredibly confusing.
The athlete has done the surgery, rehabilitation, strength work, testing, and everything else required to get back. Yet when it is time to cut, land, plant, accelerate, or fully commit again, something holds back.
At Very Good Mind, that gap matters.
An injury is not only something that happens to a knee, shoulder, ankle, or other part of the body. It is also an experience the nervous system learns from.
So physical healing and feeling completely free to perform again may not always arrive together.
Very Good Mind works with athletes when experiences like injury continue interfering with performance after the physical work has been done.

Very Good Mind is interested in what happens when an athlete's ability is clearly there, until the moment it matters most.
Competition changes more than the scoreboard.
It can add evaluation, consequences, expectations, fear of disappointing someone, a place on the roster, a future opportunity, or years of work concentrated into one performance.
The nervous system responds to those stakes, too.
That's why an athlete can need something very different from another drill, another correction, or another thousand repetitions.
At Very Good Mind, the work begins with understanding what is interfering with the ability an athlete already has.

At Very Good Mind, we're especially interested in the athlete who can already do the thing.
The athlete who performs beautifully in practice, knows the mechanics, puts in the work, and then becomes someone different when the game starts.
That difference matters.
Because practice can demonstrate that the ability is already there. When competition changes access to it, simply adding more repetitions may mean working harder on something that wasn't missing in the first place.
Very Good Mind looks at the nervous system as part of athletic performance, especially when pressure begins interfering with abilities an athlete has already earned.

An athlete can love competition and still become afraid of what a bad performance might bring with it.
Criticism. Embarrassment. Losing a position. Disappointing someone. Or simply having to sit with what the performance seems to say about them.
At Very Good Mind, we're interested in what happens when those experiences begin affecting the nervous system and changing the way an athlete performs under pressure.
Because when ability is already there, the question isn't always how to become a better athlete.
Sometimes the more important question is what has started getting in the way.

Very Good Mind works in the space between what an athlete is capable of and what happens when something begins interfering with that ability.
Sometimes it shows up as performance anxiety. Sometimes it looks like the yips, a mental block, fear after an injury, a sudden loss of confidence, or an athlete who is exceptional in practice and cannot understand why competition feels completely different.
These aren't always problems that can be solved with more practice, better mechanics, or greater determination.
The nervous system is part of performance, too.
That is where the work at Very Good Mind gets interesting.
