As #China imprisons more advocates for democracy in #HK, there is silence from our Govt. They should be pressing UK companies to stop investing there. #Uyghurlivesmatter#HongKongProtests
.@StateDeptSpox: We condemn the re-detention of these individuals under Hong Kong's national security law. We call on the Hong Kong authorities to immediately release those still held and to drop the charges against them.
Local media are reporting that dozens of Hong Kong pro-democracy activists & politicians have been arrested under the National Security Law. This is the biggest crackdown so far under the NSL & the biggest ever wave of arrests of major pro-democracy figures in one day in HK.
The addition of @HenryWONGPakYu, @samcheunghosum@yttai@owenchowkashing@wongjiyuet, Long Hair and Wu Chi-wai brings the number up to 20 arrests that I can count. TVB is reporting the number is as high as 50.
Here is how subversion is worded under the national security law:
More names to add: @ChuHoiDick, @LesterShum, @frankiefung_hk and @KwaiLamHo.
Yuen Long district councillor Ng Kin-wai brings the list to 13 so far, and in his case, there's a livestream of plainclothes police arriving at his door. https://t.co/ah9ybg3lZj
Fergus Leung's arrest is confirmed, and so too is that of Southern District councillor Tiffany Yuen.
These arrests mark the first time that the offence of subversion, one of the four categories of crime under the national security law, is being invoked.
Alvin Yeung, Ventus Lau & Gary Fan have also been arrested, according to their social media accounts. Fergus Leung is also being served with a search warrant at his home, so an arrest is likely to follow
That's at least seven arrests in relation to the pre-LegCo primary in July.
Eddie Chu was again arrested this morning at 6:25 am pertaining to the 35+ primary election. Eddie Chu is accused of breaching the draconian National Security Law. It is not yet known which Police station has been sent to.
UPDATE: Multiple 2020 Legco candidates that participated in the pro-democracy camp primary were arrested at home this morning under the #NationalSecurityLaw for subversion.
Beijing has turned Hong Kong’s Legislative Council into another rubber-stamp parliament, just like the National People's Congress. Beijing has crushed democracy in Hong Kong. #StandWithHongKong
It's heartbreaking to see our neighbor impacted by such devastating natural disasters. My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the typhoons & flooding in the Philippines. Taiwan wishes you strength & will provide assistance during this difficult time.
