Not everyone becomes self-employed by choice: sometimes it’s what happens when every other option disappears.
The "great era of entrepreneurship" is just a response to a corporate culture that became increasingly bloated and dysfunctional: HR departments unable to recognize talent, algorithms reducing people to keyword matches, and DEI-driven hiring priorities that reward optics over competence.
A lot of capable people didn't leave the system voluntarily. The system stopped making room for them.
@nicrypto Fun fact: AI isn't needed for automation.
Most assume one is the other and vice versa. Wrong. Simple scripts are just as effective at automating a repeatable process, AI is not needed for 90% of operational processes.
Fact
@broderick@moorehn I work in Academia, and here's the thing:
Companies like Microsoft and Anthropic are paying universities LOADS OF MONEY to add AI to every aspect of university workflows. There's also tax rebates for AI adoption in academia. It fucking sucks.
Americans are overwhelmingly against AI, specifically the buildout of data centers…
Everyone you talk to outside of tech/finance.
This will be a huge issue in 2028 and unless you want Bernie and AOC running America's national AI policy, Big Tech needs to clean up their pitch to the Middle and especially the Right.
Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg telling Americans that they need to use their land, resources and electricity so that we can "beat China" is laughable. If that's the goal then Gates wouldn't have pushed insane climate policies on our own nation for 15 years, and Zuckerberg wouldn't have funded groups facilitating mass illegal immigration.
If Big Tech really cared about America winning and "beating China", Amazon wouldn't be replacing American tech workers with H-1B's to save a few bucks. They certainly wouldn't hire Chinese nationals and put them directly into America's most important companies.
Aside from Elon, Big Tech has done almost nothing for the Right in America. Except censor them. The path ahead is: Nationalism vs Communism. One side is already trying to seize your assets and would likely cheer if you were gunned down in the street tomorrow. Tech guys should consider backing their newfound "patriotism" claims with policies that actually support it.
So the Big Secret in the chatbot Ponzi scheme is that the bigger the LLMs & data centers get, in most domains the chatbots are going to get worse.
They all run on synthetic data now. Hallucinations are getting worse not better. This is inevitable.
Chatbots run on human exhaust. Now we’re out of it. When “AI” companies started consuming chatbot exhaust to make up for the difference, the performance curve started to bend down.
No matter how big you make the data center, the ceiling is already built. The feverish alternating between doomsaying and hopium from the AI companies and their promoters is to cover up for the fact that the situation is much more mundane.
Chatbots are a useful search feature for human exhaust. But it’s not going to replace people, or become sentient. Ever.
The entire thing is fraud built on fraud.
When an LLM inhales too much of its own hallucinations, it suffers “model collapse.” This is a perfect metaphor for the entire “AI industry.”
@rwpopulist@GaryMarcus Yup.
Our institution is force-feeding exactly Copilot down our throats.
All other LLMs are banned on our VPN.
If you have to threaten your employees to use your LLM of choice or walk... how overleveraged are we?
@JasonLevly@RevivedThoughts When my son was born, the staff asked my wife and I no fewer than 5 times before we left the hospital whether we wanted him circumcised.
"What started as a tongue-in-cheek observation that “Trump always chickens out” has become a consistently profitable pattern. Over the 300-plus trading sessions since Trump took the oath of office last year, 9 of the S&P 500’s 10 biggest gains have had to do with relief over tariffs or Iran. Owning stocks on just those days would have earned an investor 52% on their money compared with 12% for buying and holding an index fund throughout." - @Spencerjakab
