There's a foreign language movie I watched as a teenager called Malena starring Monica Belluci. She's a woman whose husband is assumed dead during the war and she's basically sexually harassed by the men of the city who all want her and women who hate her for her beauty.
She can't find work, nobody will help her and she's taken sexual advantage of by the men in town.
She eventually has to start sexual relationships with occupying soldiers (N*zis) in order to feed herself and stay alive and when the war is over, the women attack her in the town square and cut off her hair as a humiliating ritual in front of all their husbands who all desired her.
It's always stayed with me.
Convents in Portugal used huge amounts of egg whites to starch veils, habits, and altar linens before ironing, as well as for clarifying wine and bookbinding.
That left mountains of yolks, later transformed into our most iconic desserts :)
gaps in Lisbon relationships:
- nationality gap (expat vs. tuga)
- borough gap (margem sul vs lisboa)
- nightlife gap (lux vs outra cena)
- dinner gap (seen, jnquois vs tasca)
