During a passing visit to Seaham seafront… we stumbled across Tommy!
One of the most-loved sculptures in the North East – and has been named one of the best pieces of outdoor artwork in the country.
This statue, affectionately known as Tommy stands 9ft 5ins tall and weighs 1.2 tonnes.
It was created by artist Ray Lonsdale, from South Hetton, who also intended the sculpture to represent Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
What a wonderful piece of Art!
A simple way to support those who served.

Been asked to share , so I am on here !!! T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE,
MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY,
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO,
IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES,
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT,
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR,
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED,
A TRUE BRITISH SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO,
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALISED THE FAMILIES,
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS,
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE,
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM,
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER,
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE,
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT,
A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES,
AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED,
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.."
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL,
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED,
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.
I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE,
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR,
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."
This poem was written by a Peacekeeping soldier stationed overseas. The
following is his request. I think it is reasonable
PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favour of sending this to as many people as
you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to all of the
service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities.
1 year ago I left the police after nearly a decade of service.
I didn’t leave because of the trauma, the shifts, or the danger.
I left because I wanted to help people — and was actively blocked by the organisation itself.
An organisation that:
•Breaks the law to chase stats.
•Arrests people simply because a call came in, not because there’s evidence.
•Coerces officers and punishes those who don’t toe the line.
•Promotes people based on PR, not policing.
•Treats frontline cops like dirt, ignoring their welfare.
It’s left-wing captured — kids put on police systems for things said in online games, just to tick a “hate crime” box.
It’s obsessed with quotas: arrests, stop-searches, intel reports.
If you arrest, no questions. If you don’t, you’ll have to justify it.
This culture breaks good cops. It forces them to put people on pointless bail, knowing cases will collapse. Some are left in limbo so long they take their own lives — all for a spreadsheet.
It silences whistle-blowers. I created content in my own time raising awareness of domestic abuse — the early warning signs, the behaviours of abusers. I was threatened with my job if I carried on. Why? Because prevention meant fewer crisis calls. Fewer calls meant fewer stats.
The result? Officers’ mental health destroyed. Public safety sacrificed. Justice reduced to KPIs.
I didn’t leave because frontline cops are bad. They are incredible — day after day, saving lives in spite of it all.
I left because the organisation is rotten. It breaks its own people, it fails the public, and it cares only about what looks good on paper.
I wrote a book about it, aptly named ‘The Jobs F*cked - The Secret Diary of a Police Officer.’

@TRobinsonNewEra The Police Officer has ultimately embarrassed himself. He is factually incorrect!
Suggest he formerly apologises to the person he lectured and is then, himself, sent on a refresher course before he does any more harm to those who otherwise proudly wear the uniform.
Folks a little trip back to 60’s when people worked hard for what they wanted & valued it when purchased; it was a basic life back then; Britain was Britain No weekly hate marches by foreigners; no mobile phones large flat screen TV’s few double lines👇🤔

1960s England.
It’s heartbreaking to see what we have lost.
A beautiful, safe and prosperous nation.
Now we have become a nation of crime, corruption and foreign invaders.
@elonmusk You've hit the proverbial nail on the head. The bigger the organisation, the bigger the ego. The charitable industry requires radical reform from the top down, and across the globe.
