@LastWeekTonight following up on homelessness, @Stk_Strong has been working to help address this issue in our area of Mississippi, where the closest co-Ed shelter is over an hr drive away. Please consider choosing some local non profits to support in their efforts
@iamjohnoliver Absolutely fantastic reporting. Any chance you’d be interested in supporting some new non-profits trying to address the issue? Where I live in MS the closest co-Ed shelter is over 60 mi away. U might know of our housing crisis here with #catherinestreet evictions in Starkville
@Clairedelune202@nickjudin@MSFreePress 2/ the main issues are the failure of local gov to address the need, the inflexibility and limitations of gov orgs that deal with housing, an eviction process that favors landlords and is not transparent, and a general attitude in the country that vilifies and blames the poor
@Clairedelune202@nickjudin@MSFreePress I’m the secretary for the non profit that has been most heavily involved in addressing the situation (Starkville Strong), and we have had assistance from the community, incl churches and individuals, which I think @nickjudin did a great job explaining. 1/
@jallen1985@nickjudin@MSFreePress Judge signed an abstract ruling which was attached to case file but not included in it. Abst ruling ≠eviction order but the judge hearing our lawsuit last Wednesday determined it was sufficient. Tenants still don’t have the signed order AFAIK so they don’t qual for $$ assistance
@Clairedelune202@nickjudin@MSFreePress Some tenants aren’t able to read. Some tenants don’t know and have never been told how to advocate for themselves. When police arrived 8/27 telling them to get out they didn’t know the police couldn’t do that without a warrant. Tech. correct ?s but also don’t solve issue at hand
@Clairedelune202@nickjudin@MSFreePress Your questions are technically correct, it’s hard to understand why someone would agree to that, but these tenants have had almost no contact with the landlords. They received a letter in May saying where to send the rent, but that’s it (1/2)
@Clairedelune202@nickjudin@MSFreePress Because they were not provided written leases but we’re paying rent they were considered month-to-month tenants. Landlords can decide a any time to not renew a lease
@NNatchez@nickjudin Please notice the discrepancy between what landlords have to supply versus tenants. With these requirements, almost none of the tenants in the complex will qualify.
@Clairedelune202@nickjudin@MSFreePress The landlord bought the property in May. They sent a letter raising the rent but didn’t honor prior leases. One tenant was evicted last month even tho she had paid her rent March - Sept. All of the tenants have paid rent. No one is being evicted because of of unpaid rent.
@iamjohnoliver please do a segment about the absolute shitshow that is the eviction process in this country. MS evictions are heard in a court that has no court reporter (so no record of what’s said), tenants can be removed at any minute after the hearing, plus a whole bunch else
My latest @MSFreePress. Wednesday's court hearing gave one final reprieve to the residents of the Catherine Street Apartments. But their story is only one small piece of the broader reality facing Mississippians at risk of eviction and homelessness.

HUGE news @MSFreePress: Mass evictions of dozens of families living at the Catherine Street Apartments in Starkville must immediately CEASE after a restraining order from Oktibbeha County Chancery Court Judge Joseph Studdard.
