Ocoee, Election Day, 1920. Mose Norman showed up to the polls and was turned away. That night, mobs attacked the Black side of town. July Perry was lynched.

Homes and churches burned. Ocoee's Black community fled — and the town stayed essentially all-white for decades.

• Early 2025: Hegseth pushes for the elimination of “woke” diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs across all branches of the military, arguing they undermine readiness and unit cohesion.

• February 2025: Trump fires the Black Joint Chiefs Chair after Hegseth accuses him of promoting diversity initiatives.

• April 2025: Hegseth promises that military promotions under his tenure will be “color-blind and merit-based.”

• September 2025: Hegseth outlines “genderless” fitness, height, and weight requirements for the military, described as adopting the “highest male standards” in training.

History reminds us that peace requires courage, discipline, and moral conviction. May we have the wisdom to choose it.
