Two things can be true at the same time. Someone can say something cruel to you, and your response can still cross a line. “Motherless hoe” is a disgusting, derogatory insult aimed at Nomy, and it was absolutely wrong. Nobody is excusing that. But Nomy did retaliate by calling Bells a hoe and using other derogatory insults, which some people can argue were a reaction to what was said to her and that Bells deserved to be called out for her own words. My question is, why should we suddenly overlook something as sensitive as wishing death on a woman during childbirth because Nomy was angry? Understanding why someone reacted a certain way is not the same as justifying every word they say afterwards. You can acknowledge that Bells was wrong while also acknowledging that Nomy saying her mother should have died giving birth to her was a separate and deeply cruel statement. Multiple truths can exist. Accountability should not disappear just because someone was provoked.
