India is working on the next generation of the BrahMos missile—and this time, the goal is hypersonic speed. BrahMos-2 is being developed as a much faster successor to the current BrahMos family, with the ambition of reaching speeds of around Mach 7.

The biggest challenge is not simply making a missile fly faster. At hypersonic speeds, heat, propulsion, guidance and manoeuvrability become extremely difficult engineering problems. BrahMos-2 is expected to use advanced scramjet propulsion technology to maintain high speed during flight.

If India succeeds, BrahMos-2 could give the Indian Armed Forces a powerful new long-range strike capability and take India deeper into the race for operational hypersonic weapons.
