Chennai. Last night. It rained for a while. Power went off. It came back at 9 AM.

Twelve hours.

I called the section office. I called the AE. Multiple times. Nobody picked up. No SMS. No estimated restoration time. No update. Just a family sitting in the dark waiting for someone to answer a phone.

I want to be clear about what I am not saying. I am not saying it should never fail. Rain happens. Transformers fail. Feeders trip. Things break.

What I am saying is this. Twelve hours with no information and no human being on the other end of a phone line is not a weather event. It is an sytem failure.

In all the years I have lived here, twelve hours in the dark meant a cyclone. It meant the whole of Chennai was under water and you did not expect anyone to come. Last night it meant a few hours of rain on an ordinary Wednesday.

That is the part that should worry all of us. Not the outage. The lowering of the bar for what causes one.

For two decades we priced electricity below what it costs to deliver, and we funded the gap with debt instead of honesty. Every government did it. DMK did it. AIADMK did it. Both sides called it welfare and both sides knew what it was. The bill did not disappear. It just moved. It is now sitting inside forty-year-old distribution transformers in Chennai that give up the moment it rains.

A transformer does not know which party signed the subsidy order. It only knows whether it was maintained.

So, CM @CMOTamilnadu, this is what I want to put in front of you.

Yesterday you rode the metro. You bought your own ticket. You sat in the Operations Control Centre and asked how train movements are monitored. You stood on the Kathipara bridge at 101 feet and asked about construction methodology. You ran the driverless line yourself before signing off on it. That is genuinely hands-on and I do not say that lightly.

But the metro is the upgrade. Electricity is the floor.

A city can survive a delayed metro corridor. It cannot survive an unreliable grid. Every single thing you are building sits on top of power. The hospital. The school. The IT corridor you want investors in. The small shop with a fridge. The woman on a home oxygen concentrator in Pallikaranai. The kid writing exams next.

Nobody is going to ride a driverless train home to a house with no power.

Last night the metro had a Chief Minister in its control room. The distribution network had a phone that rang out.

I am not asking you to come to my street. I am asking whether electricity distribution gets treated as what it actually is, which is the primary public service in this state, not the department nobody wants to hold.

And here is the specific thing I want an answer on.

When your government explains last night, there are only two answers available.

The first one is the one we have heard for fifteen years. A transformer fault. A localised issue. A few streets, not the whole division. Heavy rain. Teams were deployed. Supply has been restored. Every government has given us that answer, and every government meant it, and nothing changed.

The second answer is harder to say out loud. That the distribution network in this city was starved of investment for more than a decade because nobody wanted to price power honestly. That the failure is structural, it was built deliberately, and it will take money and political pain to undo. And here is the plan and the timeline.

The first answer is management. The second one is reform.

I have no doubt about your intent. None. I think you actually want to fix this.

But intent is not a system. And the system is bigger than any one person in it.

Ninety days of good intentions cannot outrun twenty years of compounding. The only thing that beats compounding is a mechanism. So I am asking for mechanisms, not assurances. Three of them. None of them cost political capital.

Every government inherits a broken system and promises to fix it. Then the political cost of fixing it turns out to be higher than the political cost of managing it. So they manage it, and hand it to the next one. That is the machine. That is how a state with our tax base ends up with a grid that fails on a wet Wednesday.

You came in saying you would break that machine.

So which answer are we getting? The transformer fault, or the truth?

One more thing.

We grew up knowing Chennai as one of India's four metros. Today, be honest about where we stand. Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune all pulling ahead. Chennai is sliding.

Quality of life is not metro rail selfies. It is roads that do not flood in October. It is power that stays on when it rains. It is a phone that gets answered at midnight.

We are chasing ribbon-cutting infrastructure while the basics rot. And here is what keeps me up. Last night was light rain in July. The real rains hit in three months. If this is what a Wednesday drizzle does to the grid, what happens in November?

Is last night the teaser for what Chennai should expect when the northeast monsoon actually arrives?

I am not asking as someone who votes for or against you. I am asking as someone in Chennai who sat in the dark for twelve hours and could not get anyone on the phone.

How does it feel to adopt the RSS style of information dissemination with cherry-picking facts while withholding the complete truth?

You claim that 119 Tamil Nadu Super Speciality seats were surrendered to the All India Quota for NEET-SS 2023 counselling (conducted in 2024). But you fail to mention when they were surrendered !

Because the question of significance is
"when were those seats surrendered?"

Here's the documented sequence of events:

1. NEET-SS 2023 results were declared with a 50th percentile qualifying criterion.

2. Round I
AIQ: 8–14 November 2023
Tamil Nadu In-service: November 21–23, 2023

Both rounds were conducted with the 50th percentile eligibility.

3. 8 December 2023 : The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare decided to reduce the qualifying percentile from 50th to 20th.

4. Round II – Tamil Nadu In-service December 14–16, 2023.

Instead of immediately surrendering vacant seats, Tamil Nadu first conducted another round (Round 2) for its in-service doctors using the reduced 20th percentile.

Only after completing this round were the remaining vacant seats surrendered to the AIQ Round 2.

5. AIQ Round 2 : December 18–22, 2023.

The surrendered seats were then included in AIQ Round 2, which was conducted at the 20th percentile.

6. 20 January 2024 The Ministry further expanded eligibility by permitting " ALL " NEET-SS 2023 candidates to participate in the Special Round.

7. Tamil Nadu In-service Special Round January 29 - February 3, 2024.

Once again, Tamil Nadu first exhausted every opportunity to fill seats through its own in-service counselling.

Only after the Special Round concluded were the remaining unfilled seats surrendered to the AIQ Special Round.

8. AIQ Special Round : February 5–8, 2024.

So, even if one were to accept your figure of 119 seats for the sake of argument, those seats were not surrendered before giving Tamil Nadu's in-service doctors the benefit of the reduced qualifying percentile of 20% and 0 percentile.

Tamil Nadu first retained those seats, conducted Round II after the reduction to the 20th percentile, and later with the seats returned to Tamil Nadu after AIQ round 2 conducted a State Special Round after eligibility was expanded further.

Only the seats that still remained vacant were surrendered to the AIQ Special Round.

That was the policy priority of @arivalayam , to maximise opportunities for Tamil Nadu's in-service doctors, who form the backbone of the State's public healthcare system.

Contrast that with your government's policy. By your own admission, only 50% of the seats will now be reverted to the State if the qualifying percentile is reduced.

So the obvious question is:

How is reducing Tamil Nadu's opportunity to retain and fill Super Speciality seats for its own in-service doctors being projected as a "great success"?

Regardless of how this message is perceived, let me be brutally honest: @arivalayam has a massive branding problem. They are widely seen as corrupt, arrogant, headstrong, and abusive. There is a heavy sense of privilege, entitlement, and vanity surrounding them, combined with a bad habit of abandoning the very people who stood by them. To the public, it felt less like they were governing a state and more like they were running a personal kingdom.

This explains the political paradox we often see in every public space: why the DMK lacks the same level of public acceptance as the ADMK, even though the ADMK is actually very corrupt. In reality, while the ADMK focused primarily on giving out short-term welfare measures, it was the long-term vision of Kalaignar and the DMK that built the infrastructure and propelled the economic growth engine of the State. Think of it like a restaurant: people will occasionally tolerate a mediocre meal if the service is warm and welcoming (ADMK), but they will completely boycott a five-star restaurant if the waiters are rude, entitled, snobby and treat the customers with contempt (DMK).

That is why the DMK loses elections even after delivering good governance, voters reject the toxic behavior. This arrogance trickles down, leading the party to completely neglect its grassroots. In politics, perception is reality, and arrogance was widely perceived to be oozing at all levels.

For the DMK to rebuild, it must be willing to hear uncomfortable truths. The turnaround has to start from the bottom up: conduct genuine grassroots internal elections and move up the chain to make the party truly democratic. Right now, cadres feel there is zero upward mobility because long-standing District Secretaries, or those close to the family, simply handpick their favorites for even lower-level roles. Every worker/cadre needs to believe that if they labor hard and win the people’s trust, they have a fair shot at rising to the top. There can be no room for favoritism, backdoor entries, or greed.

DMK has a rich history and has given this State immense progress; it deserves to rise again. But to do so, it must adapt with an open mind. Arrogance, greed, and nepotism will only drag it down. To be fair and honest, while @Udhaystalin is undoubtedly carving out his space and @KanimozhiDMK commands enormous respect from even among detractors, the party must come together, work together, and rise together.

Leaders can inherit titles, but they cannot inherit the people's trust. If the DMK continues to trade its historic legacy for personal gains, it will find that kingdoms eventually fall, and in a democracy, the voters are the ones who dethrone them. The party must democratize from within, or will be dismantled from the outside.

That is your choice.

The ship has sailed. The DMK has moved on.
